About This Floral Magenta and Cream Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This floral bed cover is made from 30 blocks joined in five lengthwise bands. Magenta blocks carry a cream flower, cream blocks carry a magenta flower, and open filet mesh bands add a light, lacy touch. A scalloped magenta edge finishes the cover.

It measures about 72 by 86 inches and uses only ch, sl st, sc, hdc and dc. It suits intermediate makers who want a bold bedroom project, and it matches easily with pillow covers made from the same blocks.

Why You'll Love This Floral Magenta and Cream Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love the strong contrast of deep magenta and soft cream. Every block is the same simple pattern, so it becomes easy and relaxing after the first two rows.

The flowers are my favorite part. They are quick to make, and they turn plain blocks into something special. This also makes a lovely gift for a new home.

Switch Things Up

Try navy and cream, or forest green and oatmeal. Make 12 blocks in 3 across and 4 down for a cozy throw. Join two blocks side by side and stitch a back panel to make a matching pillow cover. Or skip the mesh bands and use only solid blocks.

— Solid Block (Make 24: 12 magenta and 12 cream) :

Each block is worked flat in rows, turning at the end of each row. A finished block is about 14 in square.
Row 1: Ch 54. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (52 dc, counting the first 3 ch as a dc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each dc across, dc in top of turning ch, turn. (52 dc)
Rows 3-26: Repeat Row 2 twenty-four more times, for 26 rows in total. Fasten off and leave a 12 in tail for joining. (52 dc in every row)

— Mesh Block (Make 6, cream) :

Worked flat in rows. A finished mesh block is about 14 in square and matches the size of the solid blocks.
Row 1: Ch 54. Dc in 6th ch from hook (the skipped 5 ch count as dc and ch 2), *ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch; repeat from * 15 more times, turn. (18 dc, 17 ch-2 sps)
Row 2: Ch 5 (counts as dc and ch 2), skip first dc and first ch-2 sp, dc in next dc, *ch 2, skip next ch-2 sp, dc in next dc; repeat from * 15 more times, turn. (18 dc, 17 ch-2 sps)
Rows 3-26: Repeat Row 2 twenty-four more times, for 26 rows in total. Fasten off and leave a 12 in tail for joining. (18 dc, 17 ch-2 sps in every row)

— Flower Applique (Make 24: 12 cream and 12 magenta) :

Use cream flowers on the magenta blocks and magenta flowers on the cream blocks. Each flower is about 5 in across.
Round 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (8 sc)
Round 2: *Ch 8, sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in next sc of the ring; repeat from * 7 more times. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. (8 petals, 7 sts each)

— Layout :

Arrange the 30 blocks in 5 columns by 6 rows. From left to right the columns are: cream block, magenta block, mesh block, cream block, magenta block. All 6 rows are the same, so the colors run in vertical bands down the bed.
This uses 12 cream blocks, 12 magenta blocks and 6 mesh blocks. The mesh column is the open band.

— Border (magenta) :

Round 1: Join magenta in any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in the corner, then sc along the outer edge: 1 sc in each dc or ch of the top and bottom edges (52 per block) and 2 sc per row end along the sides (52 per block). Work 3 sc in each outer corner, join with sl st to first sc. (1152 sc: 260 on each top and bottom edge, 312 on each side, plus 8 for the corner increases)
Round 2: Do not turn. *Skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around, ending with a sl st in the last sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (192 shells, 960 dc)
Shells may not land exactly on the corners. That is fine, as long as the total stays at 192 shells.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends and wet block each block to about 14 in square, then let them dry flat.
  2. Sew one flower to the center of each solid block, cream flowers on magenta blocks and magenta flowers on cream blocks, stitching around the ring and the base of each petal.
  3. Lay out the 30 blocks in 5 columns by 6 rows following the Layout section.
  4. Join the blocks in each column from top to bottom with a sl st seam in magenta, wrong sides together, working through the back loops only.
  5. Join the 5 columns together the same way, matching the seam crossings.
  6. Press the seams lightly from the wrong side so they lie flat.
  7. Work the magenta Border all the way around the outer edge, then block the finished cover gently and weave in the last ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Blocks end up different sizes when the foundation chain is tight. Chain loosely, or use a hook one size larger for the foundation only.

In the mesh block, skipping a ch-2 sp or working the dc into the space shifts the grid. Always put the dc in the dc of the row below.

Sewing the flowers on after joining makes alignment hard. Sew them on each block before you join.

Pulling the seams tight puckers the bands. Keep the joining stitches loose and even.

Important Notes

Gauge: 15 dc measure about 4 in, and 26 rows measure about 14 in. If yours is smaller, go up a hook size.

Yarn amounts are approximate and depend on your tension, so buy an extra ball of each color.

Cotton is heavy, so block the blocks first and lay the finished cover flat to dry.

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat to keep the mesh neat.

I hope this bed cover brings warmth and color to your bedroom. Take it one block at a time. Happy stitching, Denise.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size?

About 72 by 86 inches with 30 blocks in 5 columns and 6 rows, plus the border. Make fewer blocks for a throw.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. DK cotton gives smaller blocks, so you will need more blocks to reach the same size. Check your block size before you start the rest.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash gently in cool water or hand wash, reshape, and dry flat. Wash the first time with a color catcher, since deep magenta can bleed onto cream.
