About This Midnight Pumpkin Hexagon Halloween Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

This Halloween table runner is about 10 inches wide and 67 inches long, long enough to run down the center of a dining table or a kitchen island. It is made from 26 joined hexagons, each worked in single crochet with three colors.

The only stitches are sc, increases and slip stitches, so it is a big seasonal project without any tricky stitches.

Why You'll Love This Midnight Pumpkin Hexagon Halloween Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how the orange centers glow against the dark outer rings, a bit like a jack-o'-lantern in the night. The two staggered rows give the runner a soft zigzag edge that looks great on a plain table.

It also works up in small pieces, so you can crochet a hexagon or two in the evening and join them whenever you like.

Switch Things Up

Swap the colors for cream, gray and black for a ghostly version. Use thinner cotton and a 3.25 mm hook to make smaller hexagons for placemats. Work a single hexagon as a coaster or a candle mat. Or add a small black tassel to every outer point of the zigzag ends.

Materials Needed

— Main Fabric

01 Worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn in pumpkin orange: about 80 yards (73 m), roughly 40 g

03 Worsted weight (#4) cotton yarn in black: about 380 yards (347 m), roughly 190 g, includes the joining

Round 8: (sc in next 6 st, inc in next st) 6 times (48)
Round 9: (sc in next 7 st, inc in next st) 6 times (54)
Round 10: (sc in next 8 st, inc in next st) 6 times (60)
Sl st in the next st, fasten off and leave a 6 inch tail. Each of the 6 sides now has 10 st. Weave in the center tail and block the hexagon to about 5 inches from flat side to flat side.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in the tails of all 26 hexagons and block each one to about 5 inches from flat side to flat side.
  2. Lay out two rows of 13 hexagons, each with a flat side facing the next one, and shift the second row by half a hexagon so they nest like a honeycomb.
  3. Join the hexagons within each row: hold two hexagons with right sides together and, with black, sc through the back loops of both pieces along one side, working 10 sc to match the 10 st on each side.
  4. Join the two rows along the slanted sides in the same way, so every hexagon in one row touches two hexagons in the other row.
  5. At each point where three hexagons meet, pull your last join stitch snug so there is no small gap.
  6. Weave in all joining tails, then pin the whole runner flat, steam block it to about 10 by 67 inches and let it dry.
  7. Leave the zigzag ends plain, or add a small black tassel to each outer point.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Uneven increases make the hexagon round and floppy; keep your stitch markers in place and make each increase group the same size so the six corners stay sharp.

Joining through the front loops leaves a bumpy ridge on the right side; always use the back loops of both hexagons.

Losing count on the sides makes the seam pucker; each side has exactly 10 st, so count them before you start joining.

Skipping blocking leaves the hexagons curled at the edges and makes them hard to join, so block before you join.

Important Notes

Keep your tension even and slightly loose, because tight sc makes the hexagons cup instead of lying flat.

Gauge does not need to be exact, but each hexagon should measure about 5 inches flat side to flat side so the rows fit together.

Cotton yarn can be washed on a gentle cold cycle; lay the runner flat to dry and steam it lightly if it needs a refresh. Wash dark colors separately the first time.

I hope this runner brings a little spooky fun to your Halloween table. Happy hooking!

Crochet Abbreviations

01 sc — single crochet
02 inc — increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
03 sl st — slip stitch
04 mr — magic ring
05 st — stitch

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished runner?

About 10 inches wide and 67 inches long, made from 26 hexagons in two rows. Add or remove hexagons in each row to change the length.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Thinner yarn with a smaller hook makes smaller hexagons, so you will need more of them. Chunky yarn with a larger hook makes bigger hexagons and a shorter runner from fewer pieces.

How do I wash it?

If you used cotton, wash it on a gentle cold cycle or by hand and lay it flat to dry. Wash it apart from light items the first time, because dark yarn can bleed. Always check the label on your yarn first.
