About This Blue Lace Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 42 cornflower-blue lace squares. Each square starts with a petal wheel at the center, grows into open lace, and ends with a solid frame. The squares are sewn together in a grid and finished with a scalloped shell edge.

It measures about 78 by 90 inches and uses only ch, sl st, sc, hdc and dc. It suits intermediate makers who like lace and want a calm, one-color project for the bedroom.

Why You'll Love This Blue Lace Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how soft and fresh the blue looks in a bedroom. Every square is the same, so after the first few you can crochet without looking at the pattern.

The petal center is my favorite part. It is quick to make, and it turns a simple square into something special. This also makes a lovely gift for a new home.

Switch Things Up

Try soft sage, dusty rose or warm cream for a different mood. Make 12 squares in 3 across and 4 down for a cozy throw. Join 4 squares and add a back panel for a matching pillow cover. Or work the center petals in a second color for extra pop.

Each square is worked in rounds with the right side facing, without turning. A finished square is about 12 in.
Round 1: Ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 16 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (16 sc)
Round 2: *Ch 4, skip 1 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * 7 more times, the last sl st landing in the joining sc. (8 ch-4 loops)
Round 3: Work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-4 loop around, join with sl st to first sc. (8 petals, 7 sts each)
Round 4: Sl st in the next 3 sts to reach the center dc of a petal. Ch 1, sc in the same dc, ch 5, *sc in the center dc of the next petal, ch 5; repeat from * 6 more times, join with sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 sps)
Round 5: Sl st into the next ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp for the first corner. *Ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-5 sp for a corner; repeat from * 2 more times, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-5 sp, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (36 dc, 4 corner sps, 8 side ch-2 sps)
Round 6: Sl st in next 2 dc and into the corner sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same corner sp. *[Ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 2 times, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times, [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 2 times, ch 2, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (48 dc, 4 corner sps, 12 side ch-2 sps)

Round 8: Work as Round 6, but work [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 4 times along each side. (72 dc, 4 corner sps, 20 side ch-2 sps)
Round 9: Work as Round 6, but work [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 5 times along each side. (84 dc, 4 corner sps, 24 side ch-2 sps)
Round 10: Work as Round 6, but work [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 6 times along each side. (96 dc, 4 corner sps, 28 side ch-2 sps)
Round 11: Work as Round 6, but work [ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 sp] 7 times along each side. Fasten off. (108 dc, 4 corner sps, 32 side ch-2 sps)
Round 12: Join yarn in any corner sp. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same corner sp. *Dc in each dc and 2 dc in each ch-2 sp along the side (43 dc), 3 dc in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in each dc and 2 dc in each ch-2 sp along the last side (43 dc), join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (184 dc)
Round 13: Ch 1, sc in each dc around, working 3 sc in the center dc of each corner, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (192 sc)

— Layout :

Arrange the 42 squares in 7 rows of 6 squares. Every square is the same cornflower blue, so there is no color placement to follow.
Turn all squares the same way so the seams match. The shell border covers the outer edge.

— Border (cornflower blue) :

Round 1: Join yarn in the center sc of any outer corner. Ch 1, 5 sc in the same st, then sc in each st around the outer edge, working 5 sc in the center sc of each outer corner, join with sl st to first sc. (1374 sc: 318 on each top and bottom edge, 371 on each side, minus 20 shared corner sts, plus 16 for the corner increases)
Round 2: Do not turn. *Skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around, ending with a sl st in the last sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (229 shells, 1145 dc)
Shells may not land exactly on the corners. That is fine, as long as the total stays at 229 shells.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends and wet block each square to about 12 in, then let them dry flat.
  2. Lay out the 42 squares in 7 rows of 6 following the Layout section.
  3. Join the squares in each row from left to right with a whipstitch seam, through both loops.
  4. Join the 7 rows together the same way, matching the seam crossings so the corners meet neatly.
  5. Press the seams lightly from the wrong side so they lie flat.
  6. Work the Border all the way around the outer edge.
  7. Block the finished cover gently and weave in the last ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

The squares end up different sizes when the tension changes between rounds, so check each square against a measuring tape after blocking and block any small ones up.

Skipping a ch-2 sp in the lace rounds makes the sides slant. Count the side ch-2 sps against the number in brackets at the end of each round.

In Round 4, a sc worked in the wrong dc shifts the ch-5 sps. Always work the sc in the center dc of the petal.

Pulling the seams tight puckers the lace. Keep the joining stitches loose and even.

Important Notes

Gauge: Rounds 1 to 13 should measure about 12 in square. If yours is smaller, go up a hook size.

Yarn amounts are approximate and depend on your tension, so buy an extra ball.

Cotton is heavy, so block the squares first and lay the finished cover flat to dry.

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat to keep the lace neat.

I hope this bed cover brings a calm, fresh feel to your bedroom. Take it one square at a time. Happy stitching, Denise.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size?

About 78 by 90 inches with 42 squares in 6 columns and 7 rows, plus the border. Make fewer squares for a throw.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. DK cotton gives smaller squares, so you will need more squares to reach the same size. Check your square size before you start the rest.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash gently in cool water or hand wash, reshape, and dry flat. Skip high heat, which can shrink cotton and flatten the petals.
