About This Floral Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This floral granny square bed cover is made from 35 cream lace squares, each framed in forest green and topped with a burgundy flower, a golden center and three leaves. Small plum and crimson flowers sit where the green lines cross, and a scalloped cream border finishes the edge.

It measures about 60 by 82 inches and uses only basic stitches: ch, sl st, sc, hdc and dc. It suits intermediate makers who enjoy a long project and a pretty flower motif.

Why You'll Love This Floral Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that every square is small enough to carry in my bag. I can crochet one on the couch, one on a visit, and one while the kettle boils.

The flowers are my favorite part. They use up little bits of yarn, and they make the bed feel like a garden. This one makes a wonderful gift for a new home too.

Switch Things Up

Try a different palette, such as navy squares with sage framing and mustard flowers. Make 12 squares in a 3 by 4 grid for a cozy throw. Make 6 squares in a 2 by 3 grid for a baby blanket. Or swap the shell border for a simple picot edge worked in sc.

Round 12: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the center sc of each corner, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (176 sc)

— Large Flower (Make 35, burgundy with golden yellow center) :

Round 1: With golden yellow, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (10 sc)
Round 2: Join burgundy in any sc. Ch 1, 2 sc in same sc and in each sc around, join with sl st to first sc. (20 sc)
Round 3: Starting in the next sc after the join: *sl st in next sc, (hdc, 3 dc, hdc) in next sc; repeat from * 9 more times, so the last petal lands in the sc of the join, then join with sl st to first sl st. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (10 petals, 5 sts each)

— Leaf (Make 105, forest green) :

You need 3 leaves for every large flower. Leave a 10 in tail at the end for sewing.
Round 1: Ch 9. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch (7 sts). Work 3 sc in the last ch (the tip). Working along the other side of the foundation ch: sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in each of next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch (7 sts). Sl st in the first ch of the foundation. Fasten off. (7 + 3 + 7 sts, plus 1 sl st, 18 sts total)

— Small Junction Flower (Make 24, 12 plum and 12 crimson red) :

Round 1: With golden yellow, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring. Ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (10 sc)
Round 2: Join plum or crimson in any sc. Ch 1, sc in same sc, (hdc, 2 dc, hdc) in next sc, *sc in next sc, (hdc, 2 dc, hdc) in next sc; repeat from * 3 more times, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing. (5 petals, 4 sts each, 25 sts total)

— Layout :

Arrange the 35 squares in 5 columns by 7 rows. Every square is cream with a green frame and one burgundy flower, so the color placement is the same throughout.
The green frames meet to form the green lines in both directions. The 24 inner crossing points get a small flower, alternating plum and crimson in a checkerboard (12 of each).

— Border (cream) :

Round 1: Join cream in the center sc of any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st, then sc in each st around the outer edge, working 3 sc in the center sc of each outer corner, join with sl st to first sc. (1164 sc: 245 on each short edge, 343 on each long edge, minus 20 shared corner sts, plus 8 for corner increases)
Round 2: Do not turn. *Skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around, ending with a sl st in the last sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (194 shells, 970 dc)
Shells may not land exactly on the corners. That is fine, as long as the total stays at 194 shells.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends, then wet block each square to about 11 in and let it dry flat.
  2. Sew one large flower to the center of each square, stitching around the edge of the yellow center and the base of the petals, and leave the petal tips loose.
  3. Tuck 3 leaves under each large flower at different angles and sew them down at the base.
  4. Lay out the 35 squares in 5 columns by 7 rows and check that the flowers all sit the same way.
  5. Join the squares in 7 rows of 5 with a whipstitch seam in forest green, through both loops, then join the 7 rows together the same way.
  6. Sew a small flower on each of the 24 inner crossing points, alternating plum and crimson.
  7. Work the Border all around the outer edge, then block the whole bed cover gently and weave in the last ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Squares come out different sizes when the tension changes between rounds, so check each square against a measuring tape after blocking and block any small ones up.

Skipping the 3 sc at each corner in Rounds 11 and 12 makes the square curl, so mark every corner with a stitch marker.

Tight seams pucker the green lines. Sew with a loose, even whipstitch and match stitch for stitch.

Miscounting ch-1 sps in the later rounds is easy. Count them at the end of each round against the number in brackets before you move on.

Important Notes

Gauge: rounds 1 to 10 should measure about 10 in square, and with the green rounds about 11 in. If yours is smaller, go up a hook size.

Yarn amounts are approximate and depend on your tension, so buy a little extra cream and green.

Cotton yarn is heavy. Wet block the squares, and lay the finished bed cover flat to dry.

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat to protect the flowers.

I hope this bed cover brings a little garden into your bedroom. Take it one square at a time, and enjoy every flower. Happy stitching, Denise.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size?

About 60 by 82 inches with 35 squares in a 5 by 7 grid plus the border. Make fewer squares for a throw or baby blanket.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. DK cotton gives a smaller, lighter bed cover, so you will need more rounds or more squares to reach the same size. Always check your square size before you start joining.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash gently in cool water or hand wash, reshape, and dry flat. Skip high heat, which can shrink cotton and flatten the flowers.
