A long project made one small square at a time.

Bow-Tie Centers

Long ivory strands are gathered by a violet wrap for a soft, sculpted look.

About This Ivory and Violet Bow-Tie Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made of 156 ivory squares joined in a grid. Each square has a ridged border and a bow-tie center, where long strands of yarn fan out to both sides and are gathered by a band of violet yarn.

The finished size is about 90 by 97 inches with the border. You only need half double crochet, single crochet, a yarn needle and a little patience. It suits anyone who wants a big, calm project that grows square by square.

Why You'll Love This Ivory and Violet Bow-Tie Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how portable this one is. A single square fits in a bag, takes under an hour, and gives you a small finish every time you sit down.

The violet centers are my favorite detail. They turn plain ivory squares into something that looks like a field of little flowers, and they make a bedroom feel soft and bright.

Switch Things Up

Try a different center color such as dusty rose, sage green or navy, or use a deeper cream body. For a smaller project, make 3 by 3 squares for a pillow cover of about 22 inches, 6 by 8 squares for a baby blanket, or 8 by 10 squares for a throw.

Materials Needed

— Main Fabric

01 Ivory worsted weight (4) cotton yarn: about 8,200 yards (about 3,700 g) for the squares, the joining and the border
02 Deep violet worsted weight (4) cotton yarn: about 120 yards (about 55 g) for the center wraps
03 Yardage is estimated from the photo, so buy a little extra of each color

— Tools Required

04 4.5 mm (7) crochet hook
05 Yarn needle with a large eye
06 Stitch markers

— Bow-Tie Square (Make 156, ivory) :

Gauge: 14 hdc and 10 rows measure 4 inches. Each square is 24 hdc wide and 17 rows tall, about 7.4 inches wide with the border.
Row 1: With ivory, ch 26. Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (24 hdc)
Rows 2 to 17: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc in each st across. Turn after every row except Row 17. (24 hdc)
Bow-tie strands: work these before the border. Thread the yarn needle with a doubled 24 inch length of ivory and knot the end. Bring the needle up from the back at the left edge, between the last hdc of Row 3 and the edge, and take it down at the right edge at Row 15. Make 7 long stitches in total, left to right: Row 3 to Row 15, Row 5 to Row 13, Row 7 to Row 11, Row 9 to Row 9, Row 11 to Row 7, Row 13 to Row 5, Row 15 to Row 3. Every stitch crosses the exact center of the square, between the 12th and 13th hdc of Row 9. Keep each stitch loose so it puffs about half an inch above the fabric at the center, then finish each stitch at the back with a small knot.
Violet wrap: hold the 7 stitches together at the center and wrap violet yarn around the bundle 8 times, keeping the wraps side by side. Pass the needle through the fabric under the wrap and tie off at the back with the stitches on the wrong side. The strands now fan out left and right like a bow tie.
Border Round: Ch 1, 3 sc in the last hdc of Row 17 (corner), sc in next 22 hdc, 3 sc in the first hdc of Row 17 (corner). Sc in next 15 row ends. 3 sc in the same ch as the first hdc of Row 1 (corner), sc in next 22 ch of the foundation chain, 3 sc in the ch of the last hdc of Row 1 (corner). Sc in next 15 row ends. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off, leaving a 24 inch tail for joining. (86 sc)

— Layout :

The bed cover is 12 squares wide by 13 squares tall, 156 squares in total, about 89 by 96 inches before the final border. All squares are identical and face the same direction, with the bow-tie fans running left and right.
Block every square to 7.4 by 7.4 inches before joining so all the squares match.

— Final Border (ivory) :

Round 1: Join ivory with a sl st in the middle sc of any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the middle sc of each of the other 3 outer corners. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (1226 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, do not turn. Working left to right, rev sc in each sc around. Join with a sl st to the first rev sc and fasten off. (1226 rev sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in the beginning tails on every square, but keep the 24 inch ending tails for joining.
  2. Block each square to 7.4 inches wide and tall, pinning the corners square and letting it dry flat.
  3. Lay out 12 squares across and 13 down, with all the violet centers facing up and all the fans running the same way.
  4. Join each row of 12 squares into a strip, using a flat whip stitch from the wrong side through the back loops of the border sc.
  5. Join the 13 strips with the same whip stitch, matching the square corners at every junction.
  6. Work the final border in ivory around the whole cover, following Rounds 1 and 2.
  7. Lightly steam the finished cover, shaping the fans so they lie evenly, and let it dry flat.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Pulling the long strands too tight. They should puff above the fabric, so keep each stitch slack before you gather it with the violet wrap.

Placing the strands off center. Every stitch must cross the same center point, so mark the center of Row 9 with a stitch marker before you start.

Making squares of different sizes. Count the 24 hdc and 17 rows on every square and block them all to the same size.

Changing the border counts. The final border totals of 1226 sc depend on all 156 squares having the 86 sc border.

Important Notes

Sizes, stitch counts and yardage are estimated from the photo, so make one test square and check that it measures about 7.4 inches before you commit to all 156.

The long strands can catch on rings and pet claws, so use this cover as a decorative bedspread and keep it away from snags.

Wash gently in cool water with a color catcher, because the violet yarn sits against ivory, and lay the cover flat to dry.

I hope you enjoy making these little squares as much as I enjoyed designing them. Take your time with the strands, keep the wraps neat, and send me a photo when your bed cover is finished.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

It is about 90 by 97 inches with the final border, made from 12 by 13 squares. Make fewer squares for a throw or a baby blanket.

Can I use a different yarn weight or hook size?

Yes, but the square size and the number of squares will change. Make one test square first, measure it, and divide your bed size by that number to find how many squares you need.

How do I wash and care for the cover?

Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, reshape while damp and dry flat. Do not wring it, because the long strands can stretch or tangle.
