Intermediate Level

You should be comfortable working in rounds, working around posts and joining squares.

120-150 Hours

Each square takes about one hour, so this is a long project made one small piece at a time.

3D Layered Flowers

Two layers of raised petals give every square a real flower in the center.

About This Lilac Flower Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 130 flower squares in soft lavender, violet and pale lilac. Each square has a raised, two-layer flower in the center, framed by open lacy corners.

The squares are joined with a flat slip stitch seam that leaves a neat ridge, then finished with a scalloped shell edge. It measures about 68 by 88 inches in worsted cotton, a generous size for a full or queen bed. It suits crocheters who like working in rounds and enjoy a big project made in small pieces.

Why You'll Love This Lilac Flower Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love a project I can pick up and put down. Each square is small enough to carry in a bag, so I made mine in waiting rooms, on the sofa and in the garden.

The flowers are the part I enjoy most. When the petals fold forward and the lilac layer peeks out behind the violet one, the square suddenly looks alive. A whole bed of them makes the bedroom feel calm and cozy.

Switch Things Up

Try soft sage, blush and cream for a spring look, or deep navy with pale blue petals for a bolder bed. For a throw, make 7 squares across and 10 down, which is about 46 by 65 inches before the border. For a baby blanket, make 4 by 7 squares. Join two squares side by side for a matching pillow cover, and keep the number of squares in each direction at 4, 7, 10 or 13 so the border count still works.

— Flower Square (Make 130, lavender with a violet and pale lilac flower) :

Color key: A is pale lilac, B is violet, C is medium lavender purple. Every square is worked the same way. Change colors by fastening off and joining the new color.
Rnd 1: With A, make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 15 dc in the ring. Join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3 and pull the ring closed. Fasten off. (16 dc)
Rnd 2: Join B with a sl st in any dc. Ch 1, sc in the same dc, ch 3, skip next dc, *sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc; repeat from * 6 more times. Join with sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 3: Sl st into the first ch-3 sp, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in the same sp. Work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each remaining ch-3 sp. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (8 petals, 56 sts)
Rnd 4: Fold the Rnd 3 petals toward you so the 8 Rnd 2 sc are visible between them. Join A with a sl st around the post of any Rnd 2 sc. *Ch 5, sc around the post of the next Rnd 2 sc; repeat from * 6 more times. Ch 5, join with sl st to the first sl st. (8 ch-5 sps)
Keep the ch-5 loops behind the Rnd 3 petals and do not twist them. This is what makes the second layer of petals sit behind the first.
Rnd 5: Sl st into the first ch-5 sp, ch 1, (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) in the same sp. Work (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) in each remaining ch-5 sp. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (8 petals, 72 sts)
Rnd 6: Join C with a sc in the center dc (the 3rd of 5 dc) of any Rnd 5 petal. *Ch 5, sc in the center dc of the next petal; repeat from * 6 more times. Ch 5, join with sl st to the first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 sps)
Rnd 7: Sl st into the first ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp (first corner made). *5 dc in next ch-5 sp, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-5 sp; repeat from * 2 more times. 5 dc in the last ch-5 sp. Join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3. (44 dc, 4 corner ch-3 sps, 11 dc along each side)
Rnd 8: Sl st in each of the next 2 dc and into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in the same corner sp. *Dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc] 5 times, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Dc in next dc, [ch 1, skip next dc, dc in next dc] 5 times. Join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3. (48 dc, 20 ch-1 sps, 4 corner ch-3 sps, 17 sts along each side between corner sps)
Rnd 9: Sl st in each of the next 2 dc and into the corner ch-3 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same corner sp. *Sc in each of the next 17 sts (dc and ch-1 sps), 3 sc in next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Sc in each of the next 17 sts. Join with sl st to the first sc. (80 sc: 17 sc along each side and 3 sc in each corner)
Rnd 10: Ch 1, working in BLO, sc in the same st, 3 sc in the next sc (corner center), sc in the next sc. *Sc in each of the next 18 sc, 3 sc in the next sc, sc in the next sc; repeat from * 2 more times. Sc in each of the last 17 sc. Join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (88 sc, 21 sc between the center sc of each corner)
Block every square to about 6.5 inches. Pin the corners square, steam lightly and let the squares dry flat before joining.

— Layout :

Arrange the 130 squares in 13 rows of 10 squares. Every square is identical, so color placement is the same everywhere: lavender squares, violet and pale lilac flowers.
Keep all squares facing the same way, with the right side up and the ridge from Rnd 10 on the outside. Lay the whole bed cover out on the floor before joining so you can check that the flowers line up.

— Joining :

Hold two squares with wrong sides together and the right sides facing out. With C, sl st through the BLO of both squares, working in each of the 23 sts along the edge from corner center to corner center. Keep the slip stitches loose enough to stay flat.
Join the squares into 13 strips of 10 first, then join the strips. Match the corner centers where four squares meet, so the seams cross cleanly.

— Border :

The border is worked in C with the right side facing. Along each edge you work into the 21 sc between corner centers on each square, and work sc2tog over each seam, inserting the hook into the corner center sc of the first square and then the corner center sc of the next square.
Rnd 1: Join C with a sl st in the corner center sc of any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. Top edge: [sc in each of the next 21 sc, sc2tog over the seam] 9 times, sc in each of the next 21 sc, 3 sc in the corner center sc (219 sc along the edge). Right edge: [sc in each of the next 21 sc, sc2tog over the seam] 12 times, sc in each of the next 21 sc, 3 sc in the corner center sc (285 sc along the edge). Bottom edge: work as for the top edge. Left edge: [sc in each of the next 21 sc, sc2tog over the seam] 12 times, sc in each of the last 21 sc. Join with sl st to the first sc. (1,020 sc: 219 + 285 + 219 + 285 along the edges and 12 sc in the 4 corners)
Rnd 2: Sl st in the next sc (the corner center). Ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in the same st. Skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip next 2 sc. *5 dc in next sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip next 2 sc; repeat from * 168 more times. Join with sl st to the top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (170 shells of 5 dc, 170 sc between shells)
The edge count is 1,020 sts, which is divisible by 6 (170 repeats). The distance between corner centers is 222 sts on the short sides and 288 on the long sides, so a shell lands in the middle of every corner. This only works when you have 4, 7, 10 or 13 squares in each direction.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends and block each of the 130 squares to about 6.5 inches.
  2. Lay out the squares in 13 rows of 10, with the flowers all facing the same way.
  3. Join the squares into 13 strips of 10 with a slip stitch seam through the BLO of both squares, using C.
  4. Join the 13 strips with the same slip stitch seam, matching the corner centers where four squares meet.
  5. Work Border Rnd 1 in sc around the whole bed cover, with sc2tog over every seam and 3 sc in each outer corner.
  6. Work Border Rnd 2 in shells and weave in the last ends.
  7. Block the finished bed cover flat in sections and let it dry completely.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Letting the Rnd 4 loops slip in front of the petals. Keep them behind the Rnd 3 petals so the second flower layer shows.

Skipping the stitch count after Rnd 8. If a side has more or fewer than 17 sts, the squares will not lie flat and the seams will pucker.

Making squares in different sizes. Block every square to the same measurement before you join anything.

Changing the number of squares without checking the border. The count stays divisible by 6 only with 4, 7, 10 or 13 squares in each direction.

Important Notes

Each square should measure about 6.5 inches after blocking. If yours are smaller, go up a hook size.

The finished bed cover measures about 68 by 88 inches. Cotton is heavy, so expect it to weigh a little over 3 kg.

Wash cold on a gentle cycle and add a color catcher, since the violet and pale lilac yarns are used next to each other. Dry flat.

Yarn amounts are estimates, so buy a little extra.

Thank you for crocheting along with me. Make one square, see how the petals open, and you will want to make a hundred more.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

About 68 by 88 inches with 10 by 13 squares and the scalloped border, which suits a full or queen bed.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Use a lighter yarn and a smaller hook for smaller squares, then make more squares to reach the same size. Keep 4, 7, 10 or 13 squares in each direction so the border count works.

How do I wash it?

Wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then lay it flat to dry. Cotton is heavy when wet, so support it in your arms when you lift it.
