120-150 Hours

Seventy-two portable squares make it easy to work a little each day.

Frosty Winter Look

Royal blue, ice blue and snow white give your bedroom a cozy Christmas feel.

About This Blue and White Christmas Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This crochet bed cover is made from 72 solid granny squares in royal blue, ice blue and snow white. Half of the squares have a white center and a royal blue outside. The other half are the opposite, so together they make a checkerboard that looks like frost on a window.

Each square is about 10 by 10 inches and is worked in rounds with double crochet. The finished bed cover is about 84 by 94 inches and is framed by a four-round border with a small white picot edge. It suits anyone who knows how to make a double crochet and wants a big, cozy project for winter.

Why You'll Love This Blue and White Christmas Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this project because the work stays small. You only ever hold one square at a time, so you can crochet on the sofa, in the car or by the Christmas tree.

I also love how the three blues and white look together. The bed cover feels calm and bright, and it keeps the room looking cozy long after the holidays are over.

Switch Things Up

Try a few changes to make it your own. Swap the royal blue for navy or teal for a deeper winter look. Make 6 by 8 squares for a lap throw, or 4 by 5 squares for a baby blanket. Crochet a few extra squares and join them into a matching pillow cover. For a different edge, replace the picot round with a simple round of single crochet in royal blue.

Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (140 dc; 35 dc along each side)
Block each square to 10 by 10 inches before joining. Rounds 1 to 3 should measure about 3 inches across. If your square is smaller, go up a hook size; if it is larger, go down one.

— Layout (8 blocks wide by 9 blocks long) :

Make 72 blocks in total: 36 Block A and 36 Block B. Lay them out in a checkerboard. Odd-numbered rows (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) read A B A B A B A B from left to right. Even-numbered rows (2, 4, 6, 8) read B A B A B A B A.
Each block is 10 inches, so the joined center measures about 80 by 90 inches. The border adds about 2 inches on every side, for a finished size of about 84 by 94 inches.

— Border (Make 1, worked around the whole bed cover) :

Round 1 (Royal Blue): Join Royal Blue with a sl st in the outer ch-2 space of any corner block. Ch 3, dc in the same space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space. Along each 8-block side, dc in each of the 35 dc of every block and work 1 dc through both ch-2 corner spaces together at each of the 7 seams (287 dc). Along each 9-block side, work the same way over 9 blocks and 8 seams (323 dc). Work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in each of the other three outer corner spaces. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (1236 dc and four ch-2 corner spaces; 291 dc along each 8-block side and 327 dc along each 9-block side, counting the corner dc)
Round 2 (Snow White): Join Snow White with a sl st in any ch-2 corner space. Ch 3, dc in the same space, ch 2, 2 dc in the same space. *Dc in each dc across to the next corner space (291 dc along an 8-block side, 327 dc along a 9-block side), (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the corner space; repeat from * 2 more times. Dc in each dc across the last side. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (1252 dc; 295 dc along each 8-block side and 331 dc along each 9-block side)
Round 3 (Royal Blue): Join Royal Blue with a sl st in any ch-2 corner space. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same space. *Sc in each dc across to the next corner space (295 sc along an 8-block side, 331 sc along a 9-block side), 3 sc in the corner space; repeat from * 2 more times. Sc in each dc across the last side. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (1264 sc)
Round 4 (Snow White picot edge): Join Snow White with a sl st in any sc. Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each of the next 2 sc, ch 3, sl st in the third ch from hook (picot made), sc in the next sc. *Sc in each of the next 3 sc, picot, sc in the next sc; repeat from * around until you reach the sc before the first one. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (1264 sc and 316 picots; 316 repeats of 4 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block all 72 squares to 10 by 10 inches and let them dry flat.
  2. Lay out the squares in 9 rows of 8 in the checkerboard layout, with Block A and Block B alternating in every row and column.
  3. Using Snow White and a yarn needle, whip stitch the squares of each row together through both loops of the outer stitches, going through all 35 dc along each edge and the ch-2 corner spaces. You will have 9 strips of 8 squares.
  4. Join the 9 strips to each other with the same whip stitch, matching the corner spaces where four squares meet.
  5. Work the four-round border around the whole bed cover, putting 1 dc through both corner spaces at every outer seam in Round 1.
  6. Weave in all ends, wet block the finished bed cover to size, and let it dry flat on blocking mats.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the ch-2 space in a corner makes the squares curl. Always work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in every corner space and check the count at the end of each round.

Pulling the yarn tight when you change colors can make the square pucker. Join the new color loosely and weave in the tails right away.

Mixing up Block A and Block B ruins the checkerboard. Make the squares in two labeled bags, 36 of each, before you start joining.

Forgetting the seam stitch in Border Round 1 changes the stitch counts of every later round. Work 1 dc through both corner spaces at each of the 7 and 8 seams on every side.

Important Notes

Gauge: each finished block should measure 10 by 10 inches, and Rounds 1 to 3 should measure about 3 inches across.

Yarn amounts are estimates from the stitch counts, so keep a few extra balls of royal blue and snow white from the same dye lot.

Block the squares before joining, and block the whole bed cover again after the border is done.

Machine wash on cold and gentle, with a color catcher, because dark royal blue can bleed onto the white. Dry flat.

I hope this blue and white bed cover brings a little snowy magic to your bedroom. Take your time, enjoy every square, and happy stitching.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 84 by 94 inches, which is a generous size for a queen bed with a deep drop on each side.

Can I make it smaller or use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Each row or column of squares adds 10 inches, so 6 by 8 squares gives a throw of about 64 by 84 inches with the border. A lighter yarn with a smaller hook will make smaller squares, so check your gauge and adjust the number of rounds.

How do I wash it?

Use cold water on the gentle cycle with a color catcher, then lay it flat to dry. Wash it on its own the first time because royal blue cotton can bleed.
