You need basic rounds, increases and some simple shaping for the petals and leaves.

130 to 170 Hours

Each square takes about an hour and a half, so this is a long and relaxing project.

Cyclamen Blooms

Every square carries a raised burgundy flower with two green heart leaves.

About This Cyclamen Flower Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is a grid of 99 cream squares, each with a raised burgundy cyclamen flower, two green heart-shaped leaves and a slim dark stem. Every square has a double burgundy edge, and the squares are joined with burgundy so the seams look like a deep red frame around each flower.

It finishes at about 74 by 90 inches, which covers a queen bed with a little drop at the sides. You will use hdc rounds, sc rounds, small shaped petals and leaves, and a slip stitch join. It suits anyone who likes portable projects and wants a bold bedspread with a garden feel.

Why You'll Love This Cyclamen Flower Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this whole cover is made one small square at a time. You can crochet a block on the sofa, in the car or at a friend’s house, and nothing feels too big until the very end.

The burgundy against cream is rich but calm, and the flowers make the bed look like a spring garden all year. It is also a project I would be proud to give as a wedding or housewarming gift.

Switch Things Up

Try navy blooms on soft grey squares, mustard flowers on cream, or rose pink on sage green. Make only 6 by 8 squares for a throw, or 4 by 5 squares for a baby blanket. Crochet one square as a matching pillow cover with a simple envelope back. You can also change the edge to a shell border for a softer look.

— Cyclamen Block (Make 99, cream with burgundy edge) :

Gauge: 14 hdc = 4 inches. Each block should measure about 8 inches square after blocking. Each round begins in a corner. The beginning ch 2 counts as the first hdc of the corner.
Round 1: With cream, make a magic ring. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 2 hdc in ring, ch 2, [3 hdc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2 and pull the ring tight. (12 hdc and 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 2: Sl st in next 2 hdc and in the first ch-2 sp. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), ch 2, hdc in same sp. *Hdc in each hdc across, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, hdc in each hdc across, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 2. (20 hdc and 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 3: Sl st in next ch-2 sp. Ch 2 (counts as hdc), ch 2, hdc in same sp. *Hdc in each hdc across, (hdc, ch 2, hdc) in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, hdc in each hdc across, join. (28 hdc and 4 ch-2 sps)

Round 12: Work as Round 3. Fasten off cream. Each side now has 25 hdc. (100 hdc and 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 13: Join burgundy with a sl st in any ch-2 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp. *Sc in each hdc across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, sc in each hdc across, join with a sl st to the first sc. (108 sc and 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 14: Sl st in next ch-2 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same sp. *Sc in each sc across, (sc, ch 2, sc) in next ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, sc in each sc across, join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (116 sc and 4 ch-2 sps)
Weave in the ends and block each square to 8 inches before you add the flower. Sew the flower on after blocking, once you are happy with the placement.

— Cyclamen Petal (Make 5 per block, 495 in total, burgundy) :

The petals are worked around a foundation chain, so they come out as a long pointed shape. Make all 5 the same.
Round 1: Ch 9. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, 5 dc in last ch. Working into the bottom loops on the other side of the foundation ch: sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in the last ch. Fasten off and leave a 10 inch tail. (19 sts)
Flower assembly: Fan 5 petals with the tips pointing up and slightly overlapping, the two outer petals curling outward and the center petal a little taller. Fold the bottom of each petal in half and twist it slightly so it looks swept back like a real cyclamen. Sew the bases together with the tails to form one flower.

— Heart Leaf (Make 2 per block, 198 in total, medium green) :

The leaf is worked from the bottom point up, in rows, with a small notch in the top to make the heart shape.
Row 1: Ch 2, 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn. (3 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (5 sc)
Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (7 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 5 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (9 sc)
Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next 7 sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (11 sc)
Row 6 (first lobe): Ch 1, sc in first 5 sc. Leave the remaining 6 sts unworked, turn. (5 sc)
Row 7 (first lobe): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sc, turn. (4 sc)
Row 8 (first lobe): Ch 1, sc in next 2 sc, sc2tog. Fasten off. (3 sc)
Row 6 (second lobe): Skip the center sc, join green with a sl st in the next sc, ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next 4 sc, turn. (5 sc)
Row 7 (second lobe): Ch 1, sc in first 3 sc, sc2tog, turn. (4 sc)
Row 8 (second lobe): Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 2 sc. Fasten off. (3 sc)
Veins: with light green and a yarn needle, stitch a long line from the tip up the center and two short lines toward each lobe. Block the leaf flat so the lobes round out.

— Stem (Make 1 per block, 99 in total, dark olive) :

Row 1: Ch 21. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off and leave a tail. (20 sl st)
Place the stem in a gentle curve from the center of the block up to the flower. Tuck the two leaf points under the stem, one on each side, and sew everything down with small stitches.

— Layout (9 blocks across, 11 blocks down) :

All 99 blocks are identical, so there is no color plan to follow. Keep every flower pointing the same way (tips toward the head of the bed) so the cover reads as one design.
Strip 1 to 11: Lay out 11 strips of 9 blocks each. Join the blocks in each strip first, then join the strips. (9 blocks per strip, 11 strips, 99 blocks)

— Border (burgundy) :

Round 1: Join burgundy in any outer corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same sp. *Sc in each sc along the block edge. At each seam, work 1 sc in the ch-2 sp of each of the two neighboring blocks (2 sc per seam). Work 3 sc in each outer corner ch-2 sp. Repeat around and join with a sl st to the first sc. (1,244 sc: 277 along each short side, 339 along each long side, and 3 sc in each of the 4 corners)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the middle sc of each 3-sc corner. Join. (1,252 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, do not turn, reverse sc in each sc around. Join, fasten off and weave in the ends. (1,252 reverse sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Crochet all 99 cream blocks with their burgundy edges, then weave in the ends and block each one to about 8 inches square.
  2. Make 495 burgundy petals, 198 green heart leaves and 99 dark stems, and block the petals and leaves lightly so they keep their shape.
  3. Assemble 99 flowers from 5 petals each, then sew a stem, two leaves and a flower onto the center of each block.
  4. Lay out the blocks in 11 strips of 9 and check that all the flowers point the same way.
  5. With burgundy and a yarn needle, join the blocks in each strip with a slip stitch seam through the back loops only, which makes the raised burgundy ridge you see between the squares.
  6. Join the 11 strips the same way, matching the corners carefully so the burgundy seams cross neatly.
  7. Work the 3 border rounds around the whole cover, then block the finished cover flat to about 74 by 90 inches.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the blocking step. Cotton squares curl and vary a little, so block every square to the same size before you join them.

Placing the flowers at different heights. Mark the center of each block and measure the stem length so the flowers line up across the cover.

Making the petals too stiff. Do not pull the tails tight, and twist each petal gently so it keeps a soft, swept-back shape.

Losing count in the border. Mark the first corner and count the stitches on each side against the totals in Round 1.

Important Notes

Gauge is 14 hdc = 4 inches with a 4.0 mm hook. Make and block one full block first, and change your hook size if it does not measure about 8 inches.

Yarn amounts and the finished size are estimates based on the photo, so test one block and buy a little extra of each color from the same dye lot.

Wash the finished cover on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, because the burgundy and the cream will be washed together. Dry it flat.

I hope this cover brings a little garden into your bedroom. Take your time, enjoy each square, and tell me which one you finished first.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished cover?

It measures about 74 by 90 inches with 9 blocks across and 11 blocks down, which fits a queen bed with a small drop at the sides.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make a smaller size?

Yes. Use any cotton yarn and change the hook to match, and make fewer blocks for a throw or a baby blanket. A 6 by 8 grid gives about 48 by 64 inches in worsted weight.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash on gentle with cool water and a color catcher, then dry flat. Block the cover again if the squares lose their shape.
