Intermediate Level

You need granny rounds, small shaped hearts and a little sewing.

180 to 230 Hours

Each square takes about two and a half hours with its three hearts, so this is a long and relaxing project.

Three Layer Hearts

Deep rose, medium pink and pale pink hearts stack up in every square.

About This Layered Heart Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made of 72 cream granny squares, each with a raised three-layer heart. The big heart is deep rose, the middle heart is medium pink and the small heart on top is pale pink, with ruffled edges that catch the light. A soft pink scalloped border finishes the cover.

It finishes at about 78 by 88 inches, which covers a queen bed with a generous drop at the sides. You will use dc clusters, sc rounds, small shaped hearts and a slip stitch join. It suits anyone who likes portable squares and wants a romantic, soft look for the bedroom.

Why You'll Love This Layered Heart Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this big cover is made one small square at a time. The granny squares are easy to take along, and the little hearts are quick projects you can finish in one sitting.

Pink on cream is gentle and sweet without being too loud. The ruffled hearts give the whole bed a lovely texture, and it makes a gift people keep for years.

Switch Things Up

Try dusty blue hearts on cream, lavender hearts on soft grey, or red hearts for a Valentine’s blanket. Make 4 by 5 squares for a sofa throw, or 3 by 3 squares for a baby blanket. Join 2 squares for a pillow cover with a simple envelope back. You can also sew extra pale pink hearts along the foot of the bed for a sweet edge.

Join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (26 sc)
Stacking the hearts: Sew the large heart to the center of the block. Sew the medium heart on top of it, a little higher so the deep rose ruffle shows all around. Sew the small heart on top of the medium one the same way. Sew only around the outer edge of the top heart so its center lifts a little.

— Layout (8 blocks across, 9 blocks down) :

All 72 blocks are identical, so there is no color plan. Keep every heart pointing the same way (the notch toward the head of the bed) so the cover reads as one design.
Strip 1 to 9: Lay out 9 strips of 8 blocks each. Join the blocks in each strip first, then join the strips. (8 blocks per strip, 9 strips, 72 blocks)

— Joining :

Seam: Hold two blocks with right sides together. With cream, work a sl st seam through the back loops only, with 1 sl st in each of the 35 edge sts of the two blocks. (35 sl st per seam)
At every point where four blocks meet, sl st through all the corner point sts together so the corner stays flat. Join all the strips in order.

— Border (cream and medium pink) :

Round 1 (cream): Join cream in any outer corner point st. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. *Sc in each of the 35 edge sts of each block. At each seam, work 1 sc through the two corner point sts together. Work 3 sc in each outer corner point st. Repeat around and join with a sl st to the first sc. (1,232 sc: 287 along each short side, 323 along each long side, and 3 sc in each of the 4 corners)
Round 2 (cream): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the middle sc of each 3-sc corner. Join and fasten off. (1,240 sc)
Round 3 (medium pink): Join medium pink with a sl st in any sc. *Skip 3 sc, 7 dc in next sc, skip 3 sc, sl st in next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with the last sl st in the same sc as the join. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (155 scallops of 7 dc each: 1,085 dc and 155 sl st)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Crochet 72 cream granny blocks, weave in the ends and block each one to about 9.5 inches square.
  2. Make 72 large hearts, 72 medium hearts and 72 small hearts, and block them lightly so the ruffles stay soft.
  3. Stack the three hearts on each block, from large to small, and sew them down around the outer edges.
  4. Lay out the blocks in 9 strips of 8 and check that every heart points the same way.
  5. With cream, join the blocks in each strip with a slip stitch seam through the back loops only, then join the 9 strips the same way.
  6. Work the 2 cream border rounds around the whole cover, then add the medium pink scalloped round.
  7. Block the finished cover flat to about 78 by 88 inches.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Pulling the ruffle rounds too tight. Keep the 2 dc in each sc loose so the edge ruffles and does not cup.

Sewing the hearts before blocking. Block the squares first so the hearts sit flat on a square of the right size.

Placing the hearts at different heights. Mark the center of every block with a pin and keep the same offset for each layer.

Losing count in the border. Mark the first corner and check every side against the totals in Round 1.

Important Notes

Make and block one full block with its three hearts first. It should measure about 9.5 inches, so change your hook size by 0.5 mm if it does not.

Yarn amounts and finished size are estimates based on the photo, so test one block and buy extra from the same dye lot.

Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, because the deep rose can bleed on the cream, and dry flat.

I hope this cover brings a little sweetness into your bedroom. Take your time, enjoy each heart, and show me the first square you finish.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished cover?

It measures about 78 by 88 inches with 8 blocks across and 9 blocks down, which fits a queen bed with a generous drop at the sides.

Can I make a smaller size or use another yarn?

Yes. Use any cotton yarn and match the hook to it, and make fewer blocks for a throw. A 4 by 5 layout gives about 38 by 48 inches in worsted weight.

How do I wash it?

Machine wash on gentle with cool water and a color catcher, then dry flat. Fluff the ruffles with your fingers while it dries.
