110-140 Hours

Make one square at a time and the project grows steadily.

Pinwheel Squares

Ridged pink wedges and airy cream mesh wedges meet in the center of every square.

About This Pink and Cream Pinwheel Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 42 pinwheel squares, each 12 inches wide. Every square has two dusty pink wedges worked in raised ridges and two cream wedges worked in open filet mesh, all meeting at a small cream center.

The squares are joined in 6 columns and 7 rows and finished with a cream scalloped edge. The cover measures about 72 by 84 inches before the edge and about 76 by 88 inches with it. You will use sc, dc, ch-1 spaces and simple seaming, so it suits crocheters who have finished a few blankets already.

Why You'll Love This Pink and Cream Pinwheel Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that every wedge is small enough to carry in a bag. You can crochet a ridged pink wedge on the sofa and a mesh wedge at the kitchen table, and the pile of finished pieces grows without you noticing.

The soft pink and cream look calm in a bedroom, and the mesh wedges let the light through the stitches. It makes a wonderful gift for a wedding or a new home.

Switch Things Up

Try sage green and cream, or navy and cream, for a different mood. Make 3 columns and 4 rows for a baby blanket of about 36 by 48 inches, or 4 columns and 5 rows for a sofa throw of about 48 by 60 inches. You can also sew one square onto a pillow front for a matching cushion, or swap the shell edge for a simple picot edge.

— Pink Ridged Wedge (Make 84, dusty pink) :

Each wedge is worked flat from the narrow tip to the wide base. Work Rows 2-24 in BLO to create the raised ridges.
Row 1: ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. [3 sc]
Row 2: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, 2 sc in last st. [5 sc]
Row 3: ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st to last st, 2 sc in last st. [7 sc]
Rows 4-23: Repeat Row 3 twenty times. Each row adds 2 sc. [9 sc on Row 4, 11 sc on Row 5, and so on up to 47 sc on Row 23]
Row 24: Repeat Row 3. Fasten off and weave in the ends. [49 sc]
Each finished wedge has 24 row-ends along each slanted side and 49 sc along the base.

— Cream Mesh Wedge (Make 84, cream) :

A sp is a ch-1 space between two dc. Each wedge is worked flat from the tip to the base and gains 2 sp on every row.
Row 1: ch 7, dc in 5th ch from hook, ch 1, skip next ch, dc in last ch. [3 dc, 2 sp]
Row 2: Turn, ch 4 (counts as dc and ch 1), dc in first dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) across, ch 1, dc in the same last dc. [5 dc, 4 sp]
Row 3: Repeat Row 2. [7 dc, 6 sp]
Rows 4-11: Repeat Row 2 eight times. [9 dc and 8 sp on Row 4, rising by 2 dc and 2 sp each row to 23 dc and 22 sp on Row 11]
Row 12: Repeat Row 2. Fasten off and weave in the ends. [25 dc, 24 sp]
Each finished wedge has 12 row-ends along each slanted side and a base of 49 sts (25 dc plus 24 sp).

— Center Rosette (Make 42, cream) :

Round 1: Make a MR, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, sl st to first sc. [8 sc]
Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. [16 sc]
Round 3: ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to first sc. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. [16 sc]

— Pinwheel Square (Make 42) :

For each square you need 2 pink wedges and 2 mesh wedges. Lay them out with a mesh wedge at the top, a pink wedge on the right, a mesh wedge at the bottom and a pink wedge on the left, with all four tips pointing to the center.
Seams: Sew the 4 slanted seams with mattress stitch. Match 2 pink row-ends to each mesh row-end so each seam uses 24 pink row-ends and 12 mesh row-ends. [4 seams]
Round 1: Join cream with a sl st in any corner st. ch 1, sc in each st or ch-1 sp along one side, then repeat on the other 3 sides. Each side has 49 sc. Sl st to first sc and fasten off. [196 sc]
Center: Sew one Center Rosette over the point where the 4 tips meet. [1 rosette]

— Layout :

Lay the squares out in 6 columns across and 7 rows down, 42 squares in total. Keep every square in the same direction, with pink wedges at the left and right and cream mesh wedges at the top and bottom.
Strips: Join the squares of each row with sl st through the BLO of both sides, 49 sl st per join. Make 7 strips of 6 squares. [35 joins]
Join strips: Join the 7 strips in the same way, 294 sl st per join. [6 joins]

— Border (cream) :

Round 1: Join cream with a sl st in any outer edge st. ch 1, sc in each outer edge st around, working 2 sc in the last st of each of the 4 sides. The top and bottom edges have 294 sts each and the side edges have 343 sts each. Sl st to first sc. [1278 sc]
Round 2: Join cream with a sl st in any sc. This sl st counts as the last sl st of the final repeat. *Skip 2 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around, ending with the last sl st in the joining sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. [213 shells, 1065 dc]
If a shell lands awkwardly at a corner, shift your starting point by up to 2 sts. The total of 1278 sc must stay the same.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends on the 84 pink wedges, 84 mesh wedges and 42 rosettes before you start joining.
  2. Lay out 2 pink and 2 mesh wedges for each square and sew the four slanted seams with mattress stitch, matching 2 pink row-ends to each mesh row-end.
  3. Work the cream edging round of 196 sc around each square, then sew a Center Rosette over the middle.
  4. Arrange the 42 squares in 6 columns and 7 rows, keeping pink wedges at the left and right of every square.
  5. Join the squares into 7 strips with sl st through the BLO, then join the strips together.
  6. Block the joined cover to about 72 by 84 inches, pinning each square to size and letting it dry flat.
  7. Work Border Rounds 1 and 2 in cream, then give the edge a light steam or a gentle press with pins.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Losing count on the wedges is easy, so check that every pink row adds exactly 2 sc and every mesh row adds exactly 2 sp, and use a marker in the first stitch.

Working some pink rows in both loops will flatten the ridges, so stay in BLO for Rows 2-24 on every pink wedge.

Pulling the seam tight when you match 24 pink row-ends to 12 mesh row-ends will pucker the square, so ease the seam gently and pin it first.

Mixing dye lots of pink or cream can show as stripes across a large cover, so buy all the yarn at once.

Important Notes

Gauge is about 16 sc and 16 rows of sc in 4 inches, and 8 sp across in 4 inches of mesh. Each finished square should measure about 12 by 12 inches, so make a test wedge first.

Yarn amounts are estimates, so buy a little extra and block your first square before you commit to the full cover.

Block the cover before you add the border, because the wedge edges relax and the sides line up more evenly.

Wash on a gentle cold cycle with a color catcher because pink and cream are used together, and dry flat.

I hope this pink and cream cover brings a calm, handmade feeling to your bedroom. Take it one wedge at a time, and I would love to hear how your first pinwheel turned out.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 72 by 84 inches before the edge and about 76 by 88 inches with the scalloped border. Each square is about 12 inches wide.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make it a different size?

Yes. A lighter cotton will make smaller squares, so make a test wedge and measure it before you decide how many squares you need. For a throw, use 4 columns and 5 rows.

How do I wash and care for the cover?

Wash it on a gentle cold cycle with a color catcher, then dry it flat. Avoid hot water and high heat, because cotton can shrink and the pink may bleed onto the cream.
