Plum Lace Clover Motif Bed Cover Crochet Pattern
You need filet mesh, chain arches and picots, and every step is explained.
Each motif takes about 35 minutes, so the cover grows a little every evening.
Four leaves meet between the motifs and form a small flower at every join.
About This Plum Lace Clover Motif Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern
This bed cover is made from 196 identical lace motifs in deep plum, joined tip to tip. Each motif has a small filet mesh in the center, four looped leaves with picot edging and a pointed tip at every corner. Where four motifs meet, the leaves form a little flower. A shell edge finishes the cover.
It measures about 100 by 100 inches, which covers a queen bed with a long drop on both sides. You will use filet mesh, single crochet, double crochet, chain arches and picots. Two matching pillow covers are included.
Why You'll Love This Plum Lace Clover Motif Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern
I love that a huge cover is really just one small motif made again and again. I keep a few balls of plum yarn in a bag and finish a motif wherever I sit. After a few weeks the pile on the table starts to look like something real.
The deep plum color makes a bedroom feel warm and quiet, and the lace lets the shadows play across the bed. The matching pillows tie everything together.
Switch Things Up
Try dusty rose, forest green or navy instead of plum, or choose cream for a softer look. Make 6 by 8 motifs for a baby blanket or 8 by 10 motifs for a sofa throw. You can also line the cover with plain cotton fabric in a matching shade so the bed does not show through the holes, or finish it with a simple single crochet border instead of the shells.

Assembly Instructions
- Make 220 lace motifs: 196 for the bed cover and 24 for the two pillow covers.
- Block every motif to about 7 inches from tip to tip so they all match before you join them.
- Lay the motifs out in a 14 by 14 grid with a tip pointing up on each one.
- Join the motifs as you work Round 4, joining the tips first and then the touching leaves at their 9th and 10th picots.
- Check that four joined leaves form a small flower at each inner point, then block the whole cover flat in sections.
- Work Edge Round 1 of 3,456 sc around the cover, then Round 2 of 432 shells.
- Join the pillow motifs into four 3 by 2 panels, then work the pillow edge through both layers around each pillow form.
Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them
Making the foundation chain too tight pinches the mesh. Use a hook one size larger for the first chain, or chain loosely.
Counting the ch-27 arch wrongly makes the leaves uneven. Skip exactly 15 sc under each arch and place a marker every 9 chains.
Joining at the wrong picots tilts the grid. Count the picots from the tip picot, and join at the 9th and 10th.
Skipping the blocking leaves motifs in different sizes, and the cover will ripple. Block every motif to the same measurement.
Important Notes
Gauge: each motif should measure about 7 inches (18 cm) from tip to tip with a 4.0 mm hook. If yours is smaller or larger, change the hook size and keep the stitch counts.
Sizes, yarn amounts and the 14 by 14 grid are estimated from the photo, so make and weigh one motif before you buy all the yarn.
Block the motifs, the joined cover and the pillow panels flat with pins so the leaves and picots lie smoothly.
Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, because dark plum cotton can bleed. Dry flat.
I hope you enjoy making this cover as much as I enjoyed designing it. Start with one motif, and before long you will have a whole bed to show for it. Tell me how your first few motifs turn out.
Crochet Abbreviations
You Ask, We Answer
What size is the finished bed cover?
It is about 100 by 100 inches with the shell edge, which covers a queen bed with a long drop. For a smaller cover, make fewer motifs. The edge total is 128 x (motifs across + motifs down - 1), which always divides by 8.
Can I use a different yarn weight?
Yes. DK weight cotton with a 3.25 mm hook makes motifs of about 5 inches, so you will need more of them. Make one motif first and check its size before you plan the grid.
How do I wash and care for the cover?
Wash it on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, then dry it flat. Avoid hot water and tumble drying so the cotton keeps its shape.
