About This Purple Daisy Granny Square Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bedspread is built from 120 identical flower squares. Each one has a sunny yellow center, white petals, purple petals with tiny green dots and a lavender border. The squares are joined with raised lavender seams and finished with a long tassel fringe.

The finished size is about 75 by 90 inches (190 by 229 cm), made from worsted weight cotton. You need to be comfortable with rounds, corners and a simple slip stitch join, so it suits an adventurous beginner or any intermediate crocheter.

Why You'll Love This Purple Daisy Granny Square Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this project because every square is small and easy to carry. You can crochet one in an afternoon and see real progress right away.

It also uses up pretty colors in a way that feels like a spring garden. Once it is on the bed with the fringe hanging down, the whole room feels softer and cozier.

Switch Things Up

Try a pink and cream palette with an orange center, or blue petals with a white and soft gray border. Make only 5 by 6 squares for a lap throw, or 8 by 10 squares for a twin bedspread. You can also crochet four squares into a matching pillow cover, or skip the fringe and finish with a plain purple border.

— Flower Square (Make 120, all the same) :

Each square measures about 7.5 in (19 cm) after Round 10. Fasten off and weave in ends neatly after each color change, or leave short tails to weave in when you block.
Round 1 (yellow): Make a magic ring. Ch 1, work 16 sc in the ring. Pull the ring tight and sl st to the first sc. Fasten off yellow. (16 sc)
Round 2 (white): Join white in any sc. Ch 1. *(Sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in the next st, sl st in the next st; repeat from * 7 more times. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (8 petals, 56 sts plus 8 sl st)
Round 3 (purple): From the back of the work, join purple with a sl st in any sl st between two white petals. *Ch 4, sl st in the next sl st between petals; repeat from * 7 more times, ending with the last sl st in the first one. Push the white petals forward so the loops stay behind them. (8 ch-4 sps)
Round 4 (purple): Ch 1, then *(sc, hdc, 4 dc, hdc, sc) in the next ch-4 sp; repeat from * 7 more times. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (8 purple petals, 64 sts)
Round 5 (green): Join green in the space between two purple petals. Work (sc, hdc, sc) in the same space, then sl st and fasten off. Make one more green dot in each of the 7 remaining spaces between purple petals. (8 green dots, 24 sts)
Tip: to avoid 8 separate green tails, you can carry the green yarn loosely behind each purple petal from dot to dot.
Round 6 (white): Join white in the hdc of any green dot (this is dot 1, a corner). Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same st, ch 2, 3 dc in the same st. *Ch 1, 3 dc in the hdc of the next dot (side), ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the hdc of the next dot (corner); repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 1, 3 dc in the hdc of the last dot, ch 1, sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (36 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 8 ch-1 sps)
Round 7 (white): Sl st into the nearest corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp. *Ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (48 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 12 ch-1 sps)
Round 8 (white): Sl st into the nearest corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same sp. *Ch 1, then 3 dc in each of the next 3 ch-1 sps with ch 1 between each group, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 1, then 3 dc in each of the next 3 ch-1 sps with ch 1 between each group, ch 1, sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (60 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 16 ch-1 sps)
Round 9 (purple): Join purple in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in the same sp. *Sc in each of the next 19 sts (15 dc and 4 ch-1 sps), (sc, ch 2, sc) in the next corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times. Sc in each of the next 19 sts, sl st to the first sc. (84 sc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 21 sc between corner sps on each side)
Round 10 (purple): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 sp. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (92 sc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 23 sc between corner sps on each side)
Block each square to 7.5 in (19 cm) before joining. Squares that match in size make the seams line up and the fringe hang straight.

— Layout and Joining :

Layout: arrange the 120 squares in 12 rows of 10 squares (10 across, 12 down). All squares are identical, so just keep every flower upright. The finished top is about 75 by 90 in (190 by 229 cm). The headboard end is one of the 10-square short sides.
Seam: Place two squares with wrong sides together. With purple, working through the front loops only of both squares, sl st in each of the 23 sc along the side. The seam makes a raised lavender ridge on the right side. (23 sl st per seam)
Four-square junctions: Where four squares meet, work 1 sl st through all four corner ch-2 sps to close the center. (1 sl st per junction, 99 inner junctions)
Join the squares into 12 strips of 10 squares first (9 seams per strip), then join the strips together (10 seams between each pair of strips). That makes 218 seams in total.

— Edge and Tassel Fringe :

Round 1 (purple): Hold the cover right side up with the headboard end at the top. Join purple in the top left corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the corner sp. Sc in each sc along the side. At every seam on the outer edge, work 1 sc in each of the two neighboring corner ch-2 sps (2 sc). Work 3 sc in each cover corner ch-2 sp. Sl st to the first sc. (1,104 sc: 248 on each 10-square side, 298 on each 12-square side, plus 12 corner sc)
Round 2 (purple): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the middle sc of each 3-sc corner. Sl st to the first sc and fasten off. (1,112 sc: each corner is now 5 sc)
Round 3 (tassels): Cut 3 strands of purple 18 in (46 cm) long for each tassel, or wrap yarn around the cardboard and cut one end. Fold the strands in half, pull the fold through a sc with your hook, then pull the tails through the loop and tighten. Start at the first sc after the headboard corner on one long side. Attach a tassel in every 2nd sc down that long side (298 sc), around the foot corner (5 sc), across the foot (248 sc), around the second foot corner (5 sc) and up the other long side (298 sc), stopping before the headboard corner. Trim all tassels to an even length of about 8 in (20 cm). (854 sc in the fringe zone, 427 tassels)
Skip the tassels along the headboard end so the cover lies flat under the pillows.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make 120 Flower Squares and weave in the ends.
  2. Block every square to 7.5 inches (19 cm) so the pieces match.
  3. Follow the Layout and Joining section: lay out 12 rows of 10 squares with all flowers upright.
  4. Join the squares into 12 strips with the lavender slip stitch seam, then join the strips together.
  5. Close each four-square junction with one slip stitch through all four corner spaces.
  6. Work the two Edge rounds around the whole cover, counting your stitches against the totals.
  7. Attach the tassels in the fringe zone along both long sides and the foot, then trim them even.
  8. Steam block the finished cover lightly and let it dry flat.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the blocking step makes squares differ in size, so seams pucker. Block every square to 7.5 inches before you join.

Working Round 3 loops in front of the white petals hides the flower shape. Keep the loops behind the petals and push the petals forward.

Missing a corner ch-2 space in the border rounds throws off the stitch counts. Mark each corner with a stitch marker.

Cutting tassels before you decide on the length can leave an uneven fringe. Attach them all first, then trim in one go.

Important Notes

Gauge is not critical, but each finished square should measure about 7.5 inches (19 cm). If yours is smaller, go up a hook size.

Yarn amounts are estimates for the size given, so buy an extra ball of white and purple to be safe.

Wash a test square first. Because dark and light cotton are used together, use a color catcher and wash cold on a gentle cycle.

Dry flat and reshape the fringe by hand.

I hope this bedspread brings a little garden into your bedroom. Take it one square at a time, and enjoy every flower as it grows.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bedspread?

With 120 squares in 12 rows of 10, it measures about 75 by 90 inches (190 by 229 cm), plus an 8 inch fringe. Add or remove rows to fit your bed.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Lighter yarn gives smaller squares, so you will need more of them. Make a test square and compare it to 7.5 inches before you decide how many to make.

How do I wash and care for the finished cover?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then dry flat. Reshape the tassels while the cover is still damp.
