Stained Glass Look

Thick black outlines around glowing jewel squares work like the lead lines in a cathedral window.

About This Stained Glass Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is a mosaic of 120 granny squares, each worked in a glowing jewel color with an amber gold center and a black outline. The jewel colors run in diagonal stripes across the bed, and the black seams between the squares look just like the lead lines in a stained glass window.

It finishes at about 73 by 87 inches with a black border and a golden scalloped edge, in worsted weight cotton. You only need chain, single crochet, double crochet and slip stitch, so it suits anyone who is comfortable with a basic granny square and wants a big, rewarding project.

Why You'll Love This Stained Glass Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that every square is small and portable. I crochet them on the sofa, in the car and at the kitchen table, and the bed cover grows without me noticing.

I also love watching the colors change from square to square. Once the black outlines go in, even a simple granny square looks like a little pane of colored glass, and the finished bedspread makes the whole bedroom glow in the morning light.

Switch Things Up

Try a sunset palette of coral, gold, rose and plum, or an ocean palette of teal, aqua, navy and seafoam. Make 5 by 6 squares for a baby blanket or 8 by 10 squares for a throw. You can also keep the black outlines and use only two jewel colors in a checkerboard, or crochet a few extra squares into a matching pillow cover.

Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] 4 times, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp] 4 times, ch 1*, repeat from * to * 2 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off. (72 dc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 20 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 7 (charcoal black): Join black in any corner sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in same corner sp. [Sc in next 3 dc, (sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 dc) 5 times, 3 sc in next corner sp] 3 times. Sc in next 3 dc, (sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next 3 dc) 5 times. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (104 sc: 23 along each side plus 3 in each corner)
Each block should measure about 7 inches square. Weave in all ends now, then wet block every square to the same size before joining.

— Layout (120 blocks, 10 across and 12 down) :

The four jewel colors run in diagonal stripes. Lay out all 120 squares on the floor, follow the four row sequences below, then repeat them, and take a photo before you join anything.
Row 1: Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire (10 blocks)
Row 2: Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald (10 blocks)
Row 3: Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst (10 blocks)
Row 4: Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Amethyst, Ruby (10 blocks)
Rows 5-8: Repeat Rows 1 to 4 (40 blocks)
Rows 9-12: Repeat Rows 1 to 4 again (40 blocks)
Total: 30 ruby, 30 sapphire, 30 emerald and 30 amethyst blocks, 120 blocks in all.

— Joining Seams (black) :

Use black yarn for every seam. Test your tension on two blocks first, because a loose, even seam keeps the squares flat.
Seam: Hold two blocks with wrong sides together and corners matching. Insert the hook through the back loops of both blocks at the first corner and sl st across, working 1 sl st in each sc of both blocks, ending in the last corner. (27 sl sts: corner, 25 sts, corner)
Join each row of 10 blocks first (9 seams per row), then join the 12 rows together (10 seams between each pair of rows).

— Border (black and amber gold) :

Rnd 1 (black): Join black in the middle sc of any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in same st. Sc in each st along the edge, working 1 sc in each seam where blocks meet and 3 sc in the middle sc of each of the other 3 outer corners. Join with sl st to first sc. (1,152 sc: 262 along each top and bottom edge and 314 along each side edge, counting one corner sc per edge)
Rnd 2 (black): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the middle sc of each of the 4 corners. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (1,160 sc: 264 along each top and bottom edge and 316 along each side edge)
Rnd 3 (amber gold): Join amber gold with a sl st in the middle sc of any corner. *Skip next st, 5 dc in next st, skip next st, sl st in next st*, repeat from * to * around, working the last sl st into the corner st where you joined. Fasten off. (290 scallops of 5 dc each, 1,450 dc)
The repeat is 4 sts, and each edge measures a multiple of 4 sts from corner to corner, so the scallops meet neatly in every corner.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make all 120 blocks following the Stained Glass Block pattern, weave in every end and wet block each square to about 7 inches.
  2. Lay the blocks out 10 across and 12 down, following the Layout rows so the jewel colors form diagonal stripes, and photograph the layout.
  3. With black yarn, join the blocks into 12 rows of 10 using the slip stitch seam, 27 sl sts per seam.
  4. Join the 12 rows together with the same seam. Start each seam in the shared corner so the black lines meet in a clean cross where four blocks touch.
  5. Work Border Rnds 1 and 2 in black, then add the amber gold scalloped Rnd 3.
  6. Weave in the remaining ends, then wet block the whole bed cover flat with pins until the edges lie straight and the scallops are even.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping a ch-1 space on the later rounds makes one side shorter, so check that each side of Rnd 6 has 4 side groups before you change to black.

Pulling the black seam too tight puckers the squares, so keep every seam stitch at the same relaxed tension as the blocks.

Placing a square in the wrong color position is easy to do with four jewel colors, so photograph the layout before joining and check it against the Layout rows.

Mixing dye lots of the black yarn shows clearly because black appears in every square and seam, so buy all of your black at once.

Important Notes

Each block should measure about 7 inches after blocking. Make one block first and adjust your hook size if yours is much smaller or larger, because the edge counts depend on the block size staying the same.

Yarn amounts are estimates for a bed cover of about 73 by 87 inches, so buy a little extra of each color.

Wash gently in cold water with a color catcher because the bright jewel yarns and the black yarn can bleed together, and lay the bed cover flat to dry.

Thank you for crocheting along with me. One glowing square at a time, you will have a bed cover that looks like a window full of colored glass. Enjoy every stitch.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

About 73 by 87 inches with the border. Each square is about 7 inches, and the grid is 10 squares across and 12 down.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. DK cotton with a 3.5 mm hook gives smaller squares of about 5.5 inches, so you would need more of them. Bulky yarn gives larger squares, so you would need fewer. Make one test block first and recalculate the grid and the border counts.

How do I wash and care for it?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then lay it flat to dry. Cotton holds the jewel colors well, and washing softens the stitches.
