About This Holly Christmas Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

This Christmas table runner measures about 13 x 39 inches (33 x 99 cm) when worked in worsted weight yarn. The center is a soft cream V-stitch mesh, framed by a border of red, green and red rounds that ends in a scalloped edge.

Two holly clusters sit at the short ends, each with four spiky green leaves and three red berries topped with gold beads. The pattern suits crocheters who are comfortable with basic stitches, working around corners and a little sewing.

Why You'll Love This Holly Christmas Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how the plain cream center lets the holly stand out. The sparkle in the red and green yarn catches the candlelight, and the whole runner looks far fancier than it is to make.

The V-stitch rows are relaxing and easy to memorize, so it is a great project to work on in the evening. It also makes a lovely handmade gift for a host or a sideboard.

Switch Things Up

Try ivory with navy and silver for a frosty winter table, or use burgundy and soft sage for a vintage look. You can add or remove rows to fit your own table, work just one holly cluster in the middle, or make a few extra leaves and berries to decorate matching napkin rings.

— Runner Body (cream) :

Use cream yarn. Keep the foundation chain loose so the starting edge stays as wide as the rest of the runner.
Row 1: ch 40, V-st in the 5th ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, V-st in the next ch*, repeat from * to the last 2 ch, skip 1 ch, dc in the last ch (12 V-sts)
Row 2-60: ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, V-st in each ch-1 sp across, dc in the top of the beginning ch-3 of the row below (12 V-sts)
Always work the last dc of the row into the top of the beginning ch-3 so the sides stay straight. Check that you still have 12 V-sts after every row.
After Row 60 the body should measure about 10 x 36 inches. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

— Border (red, green, red) :

The border is worked in rounds around the whole body. Fasten off at the end of each round and hide the tails as you go.
Round 1: join red in any corner, ch 1, 3 sc in the corner, 120 sc down the long side (2 sc in each row end), 3 sc in the next corner, 40 sc across the foundation end (1 sc in each ch), 3 sc in the next corner, 120 sc up the second long side, 3 sc in the next corner, 40 sc across the top end (1 sc in each dc and ch-1 sp, with 2 sc in the first and last st), join with sl st to the first sc (332)
Round 2: fasten off red, join green in any st, ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in the middle st of each corner, join with sl st (340)
Round 3: fasten off green, join red in any st, ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in the middle st of each corner, join with sl st (348)
Round 4: ch 1, *skip 1 st, 5 dc in the next st, skip 1 st, sl st in the next st*, repeat from * around, join with sl st (87 shells)
Fasten off and weave in all ends. The shells make the scalloped outer edge.

— Holly Leaf (Make 8, green) :

Start with ch 2. Begin every row with ch 1 and turn. The ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
Row 1: 3 sc in the 2nd ch from hook (3)
Row 2: inc, sc, inc (5)
Row 3: sc in each st (5)
Row 4: inc, 3 sc, inc (7)
Row 5: sc in each st (7)
Row 6: inc, 5 sc, inc (9)
Row 7: sc in each st (9)
Row 8: inc, 7 sc, inc (11)
Row 9-10: sc in each st (11)
Row 11: dec, 7 sc, dec (9)
Row 12: sc in each st (9)
Row 13: dec, 5 sc, dec (7)
Row 14: dec, 3 sc, dec (5)
Row 15: dec, sc, dec (3)
Do not fasten off. The next two rounds add the edging and the holly spikes.
Round 16: ch 1, turn, 3 sc across the 3 sts of Row 15, 15 sc evenly down the first side, 3 sc at the base point, 15 sc evenly up the second side, join with sl st to the first sc (36)
Round 17: ch 1, (sc in the next 3 sts, ch 3, sl st in the 2nd ch from hook, sl st in the next ch, sc in the next 3 sts) x6, join with sl st (36 sc, 6 spikes)
Fasten off, leaving a 8 inch (20 cm) tail for sewing. The spikes sit at the two tips and twice along each side.

— Holly Berry (Make 6, red) :

Round 1: 6 sc in mr (6)
Round 2: inc x6 (12)
Round 3: sc in each st (12)
Stuff the berry with a tiny pinch of fiberfill. Keep it light so it stays small and round.
Round 4: dec x6 (6)
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing, and close the hole by threading the tail through the front loops of the last 6 sts.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends on the runner, then pin it flat and steam it lightly from a distance so the edges lie straight and the scallops open up.
  2. Lay the runner flat and find the center line of each short end. Measure about 5 inches (13 cm) in from the short edge of the border to place each holly cluster.
  3. Arrange four leaves in a loose cross with the spiky tips pointing outward and the base points meeting near the center. Pin them in place.
  4. Sew each leaf down with the green tail, using small stitches along the middle and at the base point so the spikes stay free.
  5. Sew three berries in a tight triangle where the leaf bases meet, using the red tails.
  6. Stitch one gold bead on top of each berry with sewing thread, then knot the thread securely on the back.
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for the second holly cluster at the other end of the runner, matching the distance from the edge.
  8. Weave in any remaining ends and press the leaves flat with your hand.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the last dc at the end of a row: always work it into the top of the beginning ch-3, or the sides will curve inward.

Pulling the foundation chain too tight: use a loose chain or a slightly larger hook for it so the starting end does not pinch.

Sewing the holly on before shaping the runner: steam the runner flat first, then pin the leaves and berries in place.

Splitting the sparkle yarn: insert the hook slowly into each ch-1 sp and stitch so no strands get missed.

Important Notes

Gauge does not need to be exact. If you want a longer or shorter runner, add or remove rows in the body and adjust the border counts to match.

Metallic sparkle yarn does not like heat, so never press it with a hot iron and use only a light steam from a distance.

The gold beads are small parts. Keep this piece away from small children and pets, or embroider tiny gold dots instead of sewing on beads.

Keep an even tension so the long edges stay straight and the border lies flat.

I hope this holly runner brings a little sparkle to your holiday table. Happy hooking and merry stitching!

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished table runner?

About 13 x 39 inches (33 x 99 cm) with worsted weight yarn and a 5.0 mm hook. Add or remove rows to change the length.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Use a hook that gives an open but even V-stitch mesh, and expect the runner to come out smaller with thinner yarn and larger with thicker yarn.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash gently in cool water, press out the water with a towel and lay it flat to dry. Avoid hot irons and the dryer because of the metallic thread and the beads.
