Intermediate Level

You need to be comfortable with double crochet, working in the round and simple whipstitch seams.

110-140 Hours

Each of the 48 squares takes about two hours, so this is a long and relaxing project.

Portable Squares

You make one square at a time, so you can crochet it on the sofa, in the car or at a friend's house.

About This Blue Flower Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 48 open lace granny squares in cream, each with a raised flower in the center. The flowers have cornflower blue petals, a ring of navy peeking out behind them and a ring of olive green leaves. Two blue rounds around every square meet at the seams and form striped blue bands between the squares. Small cream flowers are sewn where four squares meet, and a cream scalloped border finishes the edge.

The finished size is about 65 by 85 inches, which fits a queen bed. You will use double crochet, simple lace rounds, a small petal technique and whipstitch seams. It suits crocheters who have finished a few granny squares and want a big heirloom project.

Why You'll Love This Blue Flower Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this bed cover because every square is a tiny finished project. I can finish one in an evening, set it on the pile and feel proud of it. Having 48 of them stacked up keeps me going.

It also makes a lovely gift for a wedding or a new home. The cream and blue colors sit well in almost any bedroom, and the flowers make people want to touch it.

Switch Things Up

Try dusty rose, sage and cream for a softer look, or terracotta, mustard and cream for a warm one. For a baby blanket, make 3 squares across and 4 down (12 squares) for about 35 by 45 inches. For a throw, make 5 across and 6 down (30 squares) for about 55 by 65 inches. You can also swap the shell border for a simple picot edge, or sew two squares together on three sides and add the same border to make a matching pillow cover.

Each side of the finished square has 47 sc between the corner sps. Block every square to about 10 inches before joining.

— Small Flower (Make 35 cream with cornflower center, and 24 cornflower with cream center) :

The 35 cream flowers go over the junctions where four squares meet. The 24 cornflower flowers decorate the border. Both use the same pattern; only the colors change.
Round 1: With the center color, make a magic ring, ch 1, 10 sc in the ring. Pull the ring tight and join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (10 sc)
Round 2: Join the petal color with a sl st in any stitch, ch 1, *(sc, hdc, 2 dc, hdc, sc) in next stitch, sl st in next stitch; repeat from * 4 more times. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (5 petals)

— Layout :

Grid: 6 squares across and 8 squares down, 48 squares in all. All squares are identical. The joined panel measures about 60 by 80 inches before the border.
Lay the squares flat in 8 rows of 6. Whipstitch each square to its neighbor through the back loops only, matching the corners and stitches. Join the squares into rows first, then join the 8 rows together.
The two navy rounds of neighboring squares meet at each seam. Together with the cornflower rounds on either side they form the striped blue bands between the squares.
There are 35 junctions where four squares meet (5 across and 7 down). Sew one cream Small Flower over each junction.

— Border :

Round 1: Join cream in any outer corner sp, ch 1, 3 sc in the same sp. *Sc in each sc along the edge. At each junction where two squares meet, work 1 sc in the corner sp of each square. Work 3 sc in each outer corner sp. Repeat around and join with sl st to the first sc. (1376 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, *skip 3 sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip 3 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * around, join with sl st to the first sl st. Place a shell in the middle of each corner; if one does not land there, change how many stitches you skip on that side so the shells turn the corner smoothly. (172 shells of 5 dc)
Round 3: Join cream in any sl st between two shells, ch 1, *sc in the sl st, sc in each of the 5 dc of the next shell; repeat from * around, join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the ends. (1032 sc)
Sew the 24 cornflower Small Flowers evenly along the scalloped edge, about 6 on the foot of the bed and 9 on each long side.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends on the 48 Flower Squares and block each one to about 10 inches square.
  2. Lay the squares out in 8 rows of 6 and check that the layout looks even before you sew anything.
  3. Whipstitch the squares together into 8 rows of 6, using the back loops only and matching corners.
  4. Whipstitch the 8 rows together, keeping the seams flat and the corners aligned.
  5. Sew one cream Small Flower over each of the 35 junctions where four squares meet.
  6. Work Border Rounds 1 to 3 around the whole edge, then sew the 24 cornflower Small Flowers evenly along the scallops.
  7. Weave in any last ends and block the finished bed cover flat, pinning each scallop into shape.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Squares that end up different sizes will make the panel ripple. Count the 47 sc per side on Round 13 of every square and measure each one.

Skipping a corner sp on the lace rounds makes the square curl. Place a stitch marker in each corner as you go and check for 4 ch-2 sps at the end of every round.

Pulling the whipstitch seams too tight puckers the squares. Sew loosely, with the same tension as your crochet.

Starting the shell round without checking your count can leave a shell off at a corner. Check for 1376 sc after Round 1 so the shells turn the corners evenly.

Important Notes

Gauge is not critical, but each square should measure about 10 inches. Change your hook size if yours are smaller or larger.

Cotton yarn grows slightly when washed, so block each square before joining and the whole cover again at the end.

Yarn amounts are estimates for worsted cotton. Buy extra of each shade from the same dye lot.

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry flat to keep the shape of the flowers and scallops.

I hope you enjoy making this bed cover one square at a time. Take your time with the flowers, and please share a photo when you finish it. I would love to see which blues you pick.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size?

The bed cover is about 65 by 85 inches with the border, which fits a queen bed. The panel with 6 by 8 squares measures about 60 by 80 inches before the border.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make it a different size?

Yes. A thinner yarn will make smaller squares, so you would need more of them, and a thicker yarn will make larger ones. For a different size, change the number of squares: 3 by 4 makes a baby blanket and 5 by 6 makes a throw.

How do I wash and care for the finished bed cover?

Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry it flat. Reshape the scallops and flowers while it is damp so they keep their form.
