You need to be comfortable with half double crochet, double crochet clusters and sewing seams.

150-200 Hours

Forty-two portable blocks make this a big project you can work on a little at a time.

Diamond Checkerboard

Green and cream triangles meet in the center and form diamonds across the whole cover.

About This Green and Cream Triangle Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bedspread is made from 42 square blocks. Each block is built from two sage-green triangles worked in dense half double crochet and two cream triangles worked in open double crochet clusters with small square holes. The four triangles meet at the center, and when the blocks are joined the green and cream triangles form a checkerboard of diamonds.

The finished size is about 72 by 84 inches, with each block measuring about 12 inches. You will use half double crochet, double crochet clusters, single crochet and a little sewing. It suits crocheters who have finished a few blankets and want a calm, classic cover for the bedroom.

Why You'll Love This Green and Cream Triangle Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that every triangle is small and easy to carry. You can make a green triangle on the sofa, then a cream one while you wait for an appointment.

Sage green and cream are quiet colors that suit almost any bedroom. The dense green and the airy cream sit side by side, and I never get tired of looking at them.

Switch Things Up

Try navy and cream, terracotta and cream, or soft gray and white. Make 4 by 5 blocks for a lap throw, or add a row and a column for a larger bed. You can also sew one block into a pillow cover to match, or add a simple shell edge in place of the plain green border.

— Green Triangle (Make 84, green) :

Each triangle is worked from the center point out to the base. Every row adds 2 stitches, so Row n has 2n hdc. The turning ch 2 does not count as a stitch. Sizes and yarn amounts are estimated from the photo, so make one triangle first and check that the base measures about 12 inches.
Row 1: Ch 2, 2 hdc in the 2nd ch from hook. (2 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2, turn, 2 hdc in the first st, 2 hdc in the last st. (4 hdc)
Rows 3 to 24: Ch 2, turn, 2 hdc in the first st, hdc in each st across to the last st, 2 hdc in the last st. Repeat for 22 rows in total, adding 2 sts every row. Fasten off after Row 24, leaving a 24-inch tail for sewing. (6 hdc in Row 3, increasing by 2 each row to 48 hdc in Row 24)

— Cream Triangle (Make 84, cream) :

Each triangle is worked from the center point out to the base. Every row adds one cluster of 3 dc, so Row n has n clusters. The turning ch 3 counts as the first dc of the first cluster. When you work into the last st, work into the last dc of the previous row.
Row 1: Make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the ring. Pull the ring tight. (1 cluster, 3 dc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 2 dc in the first st, ch 1, 3 dc in the last st. (2 clusters, 6 dc, 1 ch-1 sp)
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 2 dc in the first st, ch 1, 3 dc in the ch-1 sp, ch 1, 3 dc in the last st. (3 clusters, 9 dc, 2 ch-1 sps)
Rows 4 to 16: Ch 3 (counts as dc), turn, 2 dc in the first st, ch 1, *3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * across to the last cluster, 3 dc in the last st. Repeat for 13 rows in total, adding one cluster every row. Fasten off after Row 16, leaving a 24-inch tail for sewing. (4 clusters in Row 4, increasing by 1 each row to 16 clusters in Row 16: 48 dc and 15 ch-1 sps)

— Block Assembly (Make 42) :

Lay out 2 green triangles and 2 cream triangles with the points meeting in the center and the bases on the outside. Put the green triangles on the top and bottom and the cream triangles on the left and right. Sew the 4 diagonal seams with mattress stitch, easing 3 rows of the green triangle to every 2 rows of the cream triangle (24 rows to 16 rows).
Round 1: Join green with a sl st in the first base st of the top green triangle. Ch 1, sc in each of the 48 base sts of the green triangle, ch 2 at the corner, then sc in each of the 48 base dc of the right cream triangle (skip the ch-1 sps), ch 2 at the corner. Repeat for the bottom green triangle and the left cream triangle. Sl st to the first sc to join. (192 sc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 48 sc per side)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each ch-2 corner sp. Sl st to the first sc to join and fasten off. (200 sc, 4 ch-2 corner sps, 50 sc per side)
Block each finished square to about 12 inches before joining.

— Layout and Joining :

Arrange the 42 blocks in 6 columns and 7 rows, about 72 by 84 inches. Every block faces the same way, with the green triangles on the top and bottom and the cream triangles on the left and right. Blocks side by side join cream to cream, and blocks above and below join green to green, which makes the diamonds.
Hold two blocks with wrong sides together. Start with a sl st through the ch-2 corner sps of both blocks, then sl st through both loops of each of the 50 sc, and end with a sl st through the next pair of ch-2 corner sps. (52 sl st per seam)
Join the blocks into 7 strips of 6 blocks first (35 seams), then join the 7 strips with 6 long seams of 6 blocks each (36 seams). There are 71 block-to-block seams in total. At each corner where four blocks meet, sl st through all the corner sps so the point stays neat.

— Outer Edge (green) :

Count the edge stitches this way. The outside of the cover is 26 block sides long, and each side has 50 sc, which is 1,300 sc. Add 2 sc at each of the 22 joins between blocks (44 sc) and 3 sc in each of the 4 outer corners (12 sc). The total is 1,300 + 44 + 12 = 1,356 sc.
Round 1: Join green with a sl st in any sc on the outer edge. Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 2 sc in the join between two blocks and 3 sc in the ch-2 sp of each outer corner. Sl st to the first sc to join. (1,356 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the center sc of each corner group. Sl st to the first sc to join and fasten off. (1,364 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make 84 green triangles and 84 cream triangles, and weave in the ends except the long sewing tails.
  2. Make each block by laying out 2 green and 2 cream triangles with the green on the top and bottom, then sew the 4 diagonal seams with mattress stitch.
  3. Work Rounds 1 and 2 of the Block Assembly around each square, then block all 42 squares to about 12 inches and let them dry.
  4. Lay the blocks out in 6 columns and 7 rows with every block facing the same way, as in the Layout and Joining section.
  5. Join the blocks into 7 strips of 6, then join the strips, working 52 sl st on every seam.
  6. Check that the green triangles of the blocks above and below each other meet in green diamonds and the cream triangles meet in cream diamonds.
  7. Work the Outer Edge around the whole cover, then block the edge lightly and weave in the last ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Losing count in the green triangle. Check that every row has 2 more stitches than the one before, so Row 24 has exactly 48 hdc.

Skipping the clusters at the row ends in the cream triangle. Always work the first cluster in the first st and the last cluster in the last st, or the triangle will lean to one side.

Sewing the diagonal seams without easing. The green side has 24 rows and the cream side has 16, so match 3 rows to 2 rows to keep the seam flat.

Turning a block the wrong way when you join. If the green and cream are not on the same sides in every block, the diamonds will not line up.

Important Notes

Gauge: 16 hdc measure about 4 inches wide, and 4 cream clusters measure about 3 inches wide. Each block should block to about 12 inches square. Make one block first and change your hook size if needed.

Yarn amounts and sizes are estimated from the photo, so buy a little extra green and cream and keep the same dye lot together.

Block the finished cover flat so the open holes in the cream triangles stay square and even.

Wash gently in cool water with a color catcher, because the green yarn can bleed onto the cream. Dry flat.

I hope you enjoy watching the diamonds appear as the blocks come together. Send me a message when your first block is joined, I would love to hear how it turned out.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bedspread?

With 6 by 7 blocks of about 12 inches each, it measures about 72 by 84 inches. Add a column or a row of blocks for a larger bed.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Worsted cotton with a 4 mm hook makes larger blocks, so you would need fewer of them. Keep the stitch counts the same and check the block size first.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, then lay it flat to dry. Reshape the squares by hand while it is damp.
