Butterfly Medallion Table Runner Crochet Pattern
You need sc, chain arches and popcorn stitches, plus simple joining as you go.
About 20 to 26 hours, and easy to work one medallion at a time.
Three little burgundy-edged butterflies rest on the runner like they just landed.
About This Butterfly Medallion Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern
This table runner is a row of seven soft pink discs, each wrapped in a cream lace ring with a popcorn edge. The rings overlap and join, so the runner curves gently down the table. Three butterflies with cream centers, pink bands and burgundy edging sit on top.
It measures about 10 inches wide and 40 inches long after blocking. You will use single crochet, chain arches, popcorn stitches and a little sewing. It suits a crocheter who has made a few doilies or motifs and wants a bigger project.
Why You'll Love This Butterfly Medallion Table Runner Crochet Pattern Pattern
I love how the pink gets lighter as each disc grows outward. The cream lace ring frames it like a picture frame.
The butterflies are my favorite part. They are small flat pieces, so they work up fast, and they make the whole runner feel like spring.
Switch Things Up
Try lavender discs with sage butterflies, or aqua and white for a summer table. You can make only five medallions for a shorter runner or a coffee table. A thicker cotton and a 4 mm hook gives bigger medallions, so you will need fewer of them. For the holidays, swap the pinks for deep red and keep the cream lace.

Assembly Instructions
- Make seven Pink Discs, then work a Cream Lace Ring around each one so you have seven finished medallions.
- Lay the medallions in a zigzag line, with the pink discs falling alternately to the left and right of the runner, and overlap each pair by about 6 arches.
- Join the rings as you work Round 6 of Rings 2 to 7, using the joining tip, so the runner grows medallion by medallion.
- Weave in all ends on both sides of the work, then pin the runner flat on blocking mats, spritz with water, shape the arches open and let it dry fully.
- Sew two Upper Wings and two Lower Wings to the sides of each Butterfly Body along the straight edges, with the Upper Wings angled up and the Lower Wings below them.
- Sew the two Antennae to the top of each body, then weave in the remaining ends.
- Place one butterfly on the pink disc of medallion 2, 4 and 6, and tack each one down with a few small stitches so you can remove them before washing.
Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them
The lace rings can curl or ruffle if your chains are too tight, so keep your chains relaxed and block firmly.
Missing the first ch-sp arch when joining each lace round will leave you with 23 arches instead of 24, so count your arches at the end of every round.
Popcorn stitches that are too loose look flat instead of round, so pull the dropped loop through firmly each time.
Joining the rings at different arches on each medallion makes the runner twist, so use 6 arches in the same position on every ring.
Important Notes
Gauge does not need to be exact, but your discs should lie flat. If they ruffle, go down a hook size.
Blocking is what opens up the lace arches and makes the runner lie straight, so do not skip it.
Hand wash gently in cool water, press out the water in a towel and lay flat to dry.
Remove the butterflies before washing if you can.
I hope you enjoy making this runner as much as I did. Take it one medallion at a time, and show me your butterflies when they are done. Happy hooking!
Crochet Abbreviations
You Ask, We Answer
How big is the finished table runner?
About 10 inches wide and 40 inches long after blocking, using DK cotton and a 3.25 mm hook.
Can I use a different yarn weight?
Yes. Worsted weight with a 4 mm hook makes bigger medallions, so seven will give you a longer runner. Use fewer medallions for a shorter one.
How do I wash this runner?
Hand wash in cool water, press out the water in a towel and lay it flat to dry. Remove the butterflies first if you can.
