About This Dusty Blue and Cream Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 80 bowtie granny squares in dusty blue and cream. Each square has two open lace sides in cream and two solid sides in blue, so the joined squares form crisp diamonds across the bed.

Each square measures about 8 inches. The squares are joined with flat blue seams and finished with a thin cream scalloped edging. The finished size is about 66 by 82 inches. It suits crocheters who are comfortable with double crochet and changing colors.

Why You'll Love This Dusty Blue and Cream Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that every square is small and portable. I made them in the car, on the sofa and at the kitchen table, and the stack grew faster than I expected.

The dusty blue and cream look calm and fresh in a bedroom, and they pair nicely with white bedding and light wood. It also makes a very special handmade gift for a new home.

Switch Things Up

Try sage green and cream, or dusty pink and cream, for a different mood. Make 4 by 5 squares for a baby blanket of about 32 by 40 inches, or 6 by 8 squares for a throw of about 48 by 64 inches. You can also use the blue for the scalloped edging, or turn every other square a quarter turn for a checkerboard look.

— Bowtie Granny Square (Make 80, cream and dusty blue) :

Each square uses both colors. Cream makes the open lace sides (left and right) and blue makes the solid sides (top and bottom). Change color by pulling the new color through on the last yo of the last stitch. Do not carry yarn across the open cream sides: cut the old color at each change, leave a 4 inch tail and crochet over it as you go.
Round 1: With cream, ch 4 and sl st in the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in ring, ch 2, [3 dc in ring, ch 2] 3 times, sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (12 dc, 4 ch-2 sp)
Hold the square so the beginning cluster is the left side. Going clockwise the four clusters are Left, Top, Right and Bottom. The ch-2 sp after the Left cluster is the top left corner (TL), then top right (TR), bottom right (BR) and bottom left (BL).
Round 2: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. TL corner: ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, change to blue, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp. Top (blue): dc in each of the 3 dc. TR corner: 2 dc in the ch-2 sp, change to cream, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. Right (cream): ch 1. BR corner: 3 dc in the ch-2 sp, change to blue, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp. Bottom (blue): dc in each of the 3 dc. BL corner: 2 dc in the ch-2 sp, change to cream, ch 2, 3 dc in same sp. Left (cream): ch 1, sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (26 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 2 ch-1 sp)
Round 3: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. Work the four corners as in Round 2. Top and Bottom (blue): dc in each of the next 7 dc. Right and Left (cream): ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (40 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 4 ch-1 sp)
Round 4: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. Work the four corners as in Round 2. Top and Bottom (blue): dc in each of the next 11 dc. Right and Left (cream): ch 1, [3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 2 times. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (54 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 6 ch-1 sp)
Round 5: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. Work the four corners as in Round 2. Top and Bottom (blue): dc in each of the next 15 dc. Right and Left (cream): ch 1, [3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 3 times. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (68 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 8 ch-1 sp)
Round 6: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. Work the four corners as in Round 2. Top and Bottom (blue): dc in each of the next 19 dc. Right and Left (cream): ch 1, [3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 4 times. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (82 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 10 ch-1 sp)
Round 7: Sl st in the next 2 dc and in the TL ch-2 sp. Work the four corners as in Round 2. Top and Bottom (blue): dc in each of the next 23 dc. Right and Left (cream): ch 1, [3 dc in the next ch-1 sp, ch 1] 5 times. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3 and fasten off. (96 dc, 4 ch-2 sp, 12 ch-1 sp)
Each side of the finished square has 27 stitches between the corner spaces (dc and ch-1 sp count as stitches). Block each square to about 8 inches (20 cm).

— Layout :

Arrange the 80 squares in 10 rows of 8 squares. Turn every square the same way, with the cream lace sides left and right and the blue solid sides top and bottom.
Neighboring cream sides meet to form open cream diamonds along the vertical seams, and neighboring blue sides meet to form solid blue diamonds along the horizontal seams.
The joined bed cover measures about 64 by 80 inches (163 by 203 cm) before the border.

— Border (cream scalloped edging) :

Round 1: Join cream in any outer corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the corner sp. *Sc in each of the next 27 stitches of the square, then sc through both ch-2 corner spaces at the next seam. Repeat from * along the side, ending with 27 sc on the last square. Work 3 sc in the next outer corner sp. Repeat on all four sides (223 sc on each 8-square side and 279 sc on each 10-square side), sl st to first sc. (1,016 sc)
Round 2: Do not turn. *Skip the next sc, 3 dc in the next sc, skip the next sc, sl st in the next sc. Repeat from * around, ending with a sl st in the first sc of Round 1 and fasten off. (254 scallops, 762 dc, 254 sl st)
If a scallop does not fall evenly on a corner, shift the pattern by one stitch. The total of 1,016 sc divides evenly by 4, so the scallops close up exactly.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block every square to about 8 inches and weave in all ends before you join anything.
  2. Lay out the 80 squares in 10 rows of 8, all turned the same way, with the cream sides left and right.
  3. Place two squares with wrong sides together and join them with blue, working a slip stitch through the back loops of the 27 stitches along the seam.
  4. Join the squares into 10 rows of 8, then join the rows to each other in the same way.
  5. At every point where four squares meet, slip stitch through all four corner spaces and keep the seam flat.
  6. Block the whole bed cover flat to about 64 by 80 inches.
  7. Work the two cream border rounds around the outer edge, then weave in the last ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Squares that end up different sizes make the joins ripple, so check every square against 8 inches after blocking.

Skipped ch-1 spaces on the cream sides change the stitch count, so count your ch-1 sp at the end of every round.

Turning some squares a different way breaks the diamond pattern, so lay everything out and check the direction before joining.

Pulling the slip stitch seams too tight makes the cover stiff, so keep the seam loops relaxed.

Important Notes

Gauge: 7 rounds should measure about 8 inches (20 cm) across after blocking with a 5.0 mm hook. Go up or down a hook size to match.

Yarn amounts are estimates for 80 squares, so buy extra of both colors from the same dye lot.

Wash cold on a gentle cycle and dry flat to keep the squares the same size.

I hope you enjoy making this bed cover as much as I did. Make one square, then another, and before long you will have a big stack.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

About 66 by 82 inches including the border, made from 80 squares of about 8 inches each.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make a smaller size?

Yes. Use a different weight and hook, and expect each square to change size. For a throw, make 6 by 8 squares for about 48 by 64 inches.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash it cold on a gentle cycle with mild soap and dry it flat. Do not wring it, so the open cream lace keeps its shape.
