Gray and White Flower Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern
60-80 Hours 0 made this
Intermediate Level

You need to be comfortable with chain spaces, double crochet and joining motifs as you go.

60-80 Hours

Each medallion takes about 40 minutes, so the project works well one piece at a time.

Lace Look, Soft Drape

Open gray spokes around a crisp white center give the cover a light, airy look.

About This Gray and White Flower Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 80 round flower medallions. Each one has a white center ring, open light gray spokes and a scalloped outer edge. The medallions are joined as you go at four points and finished with a shell border in the same gray. The cover measures about 64 by 80 inches, so it covers the top of a full or queen bed with a soft drape over the sides.

You will use chain spaces, double crochet shells and a simple join-as-you-go method. It suits crocheters who have finished a few motif projects and want a bigger challenge that still works one small piece at a time.

Why You'll Love This Gray and White Flower Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this whole bed cover grows from one small medallion. I keep a bag with my yarn and hook next to my chair, and I can finish one piece in an evening. After a few weeks the pile turns into something that fills a whole bed.

The gray and white together feel calm and fresh in a bedroom. You can make matching pillow covers from the same medallions, so the whole bed looks pulled together. It also makes a lovely gift for a wedding or a new home.

Switch Things Up

Try a few changes to make it your own. Use cream centers with dusty blue spokes for a softer look, or a deep charcoal with white centers for a bolder one. Make only 5 columns by 6 rows (30 medallions) for a cozy throw, or 3 by 4 for a baby blanket. For matching pillow covers, join 2 by 2 medallions, add the same border and sew two panels together. You can also swap the shell border for a plain single crochet edge if you want a cleaner finish.

— Flower Medallion (Make 80, white center and light gray) :

Each medallion should measure about 8 in (20 cm) across after blocking. Make one first and check the size before you make the rest. If yours is smaller, go up half a hook size.
Round 1 (white): Ch 8, join with sl st to the first ch to form a ring. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 15 dc into the ring, join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (16 dc)
Round 2 (white): Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, then 2 dc in each remaining st around, join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (32 dc)
Round 3 (white): Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off white. (32 sc)
Round 4 (light gray): Join light gray with a sl st in any st. Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 8, skip next st, [sc in next st, ch 8, skip next st] 15 times, join with sl st to the first sc. (16 sc and 16 ch-8 sps)
The ch-8 loops become the open spokes of the flower. Keep them relaxed and the same length so the medallion stays flat.
Round 5 (light gray): Sl st into the first ch-8 sp. Ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 5, [sc in next ch-8 sp, ch 5] 15 times, join with sl st to the first sc. (16 sc and 16 ch-5 sps)
Round 6 (light gray): Sl st into the first ch-5 sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 6 dc in same sp, sc in next ch-5 sp, [7 dc in next ch-5 sp, sc in next ch-5 sp] 7 times, join with sl st to the top of the beginning ch 3. (8 shells of 7 dc and 8 sc)
Round 7 (light gray): Ch 1, [2 sc in the first dc of the shell, sc in each of the next 5 dc, 2 sc in the last dc, sc in next sc] 8 times, join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off. (80 sc)
Each scallop in Round 7 is 10 sc: the 9 sc worked over a shell plus the sc after it. Count the scallops 1 to 8 starting from the beginning of the round. The 5th sc of a scallop sits at the center of its shell.

— Layout and Joining (8 columns by 10 rows, 80 medallions) :

Join the medallions as you work Round 7. Joining scallops are 1, 3, 5 and 7. Scallop 1 faces up (north), scallop 3 faces right (east), scallop 5 faces down (south) and scallop 7 faces left (west). The diagonal scallops 2, 4, 6 and 8 are never joined and stay open.
To join at the 5th sc of a scallop: drop the loop from your hook, insert the hook into the 5th sc of the matching scallop on the neighbor medallion, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through, then keep working the round. The stitch count does not change.
Row 1: Medallion 1 has no joins. Medallions 2 to 8 each join at scallop 7 to scallop 3 of the medallion to their left. (8 medallions)
Rows 2 to 10: The first medallion of each row joins at scallop 1 to scallop 5 of the medallion above it. Every other medallion joins at scallop 1 to the medallion above and at scallop 7 to the medallion on its left. (72 medallions)
Color placement: Every medallion has a white center ring and light gray spokes and edge, so the color layout is the same across the whole cover. Total: 80 medallions.

— Border (light gray) :

The outside edge has 104 exposed scallops and 32 places where two medallions meet. Mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker.
Round 1: Join light gray with a sl st in the first sc of any exposed scallop on the top edge. Ch 1, sc in each of the 10 sc of every exposed scallop around the outside, and ch 1 at each of the 32 places where two medallions meet. Join with sl st to the first sc. (1,040 sc and 32 ch-1 sps, 1,072 sts in all)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the first st, skip next 3 sts, 7 dc in next st, skip next 3 sts, [sc in next st, skip next 3 sts, 7 dc in next st, skip next 3 sts] until all sts are used, join with sl st to the first sc. (134 shells of 7 dc and 134 sc)
Each repeat uses 8 sts, so 1,072 sts make exactly 134 repeats. If your Round 1 count is a little off, skip 2 or 4 sts in a few places so the shells still land evenly.
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in each dc and each sc around, join with sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in the end. (1,072 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make one flower medallion, block it lightly and check that it measures about 8 in (20 cm) across, then make the remaining 79.
  2. Lay out the medallions on a bed or clean floor in 8 columns and 10 rows so you know where each piece goes.
  3. Join the medallions as you work Round 7, following the Layout and Joining section. Work row by row from the top left so each new medallion meets its upper and left neighbors.
  4. Weave in all yarn ends on the back of each medallion before you start the border, because the lace is hard to tidy later.
  5. Wet block the whole cover flat on blocking mats with pins, easing each medallion into a round shape, and let it dry completely.
  6. Work Border Rounds 1 to 3 around the full outside edge, following the stitch counts for the exposed scallops and the 32 meeting places.
  7. Weave in the last ends and give the cover a final light steam or press with your hand to settle the scallops.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Uneven medallion sizes: tight or loose ch-8 spokes change the diameter, so keep your chains relaxed and check the first medallion against your measuring tape.

Joining at the wrong scallop: count the scallops from the start of Round 7 and always join at scallops 1, 3, 5 and 7, or the rows will not line up.

Tight joins: pull the join loop up loosely so the cover can drape over the side of the bed.

Skipping the border count: check that Round 1 gives 1,072 sts before you start Round 2, so the shells land evenly.

Important Notes

Gauge is about 8 in (20 cm) per medallion with a 6 mm hook and bulky cotton. Blocking opens the spokes and makes the sizes match.

Yarn amounts are estimates. Buy extra in the same dye lot, especially for the gray.

Use a machine washable cotton or cotton blend and wash on a gentle cycle. Dry flat to keep the medallions round.

I hope you enjoy making this bed cover as much as I did. Take it one medallion at a time, and soon you will have a cozy piece for your bed. Happy crocheting!

Crochet Abbreviations

01 ch — chain

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size of this bed cover?

With 80 medallions in 8 columns by 10 rows, it measures about 64 by 80 inches before the border. The border adds a little more, and the size depends on your yarn and tension.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. Worsted cotton with a 5 mm hook makes smaller medallions, so you will need more of them for the same size. Check the size of one medallion and adjust the number of columns and rows to fit your bed.

How do I wash and care for the bed cover?

Use a machine washable cotton or cotton blend, wash on a gentle cycle in cool water and dry it flat. Do not hang it wet, because the open lace can stretch.
