About This Blue and White Peppermint Swirl Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made of 80 square blocks. Each block has a round peppermint swirl in the middle, worked in single crochet with royal blue and white, and an open white lace square around it. A blue scalloped edge finishes the cover.

The finished size is about 82 by 102 inches (208 by 259 cm), with each block measuring about 10 inches. It suits a confident beginner ready for a big project, or anyone who loves tapestry color work and lace.

Why You'll Love This Blue and White Peppermint Swirl Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this project because every block is small and portable. You can work on one circle in the car, at the table or on the sofa, and the swirl appears round by round like magic.

It is also a wonderful gift. A blue and white bed cover feels fresh and cozy all winter, and it looks lovely with matching pillows.

Switch Things Up

Try a soft baby blue and white palette for a calmer look, or swap the blue for green to make a holiday version. Make only 3 by 4 blocks for a baby blanket, or 5 by 6 blocks for a sofa throw. You can also sew 2 by 3 blocks into a pillow cover, or finish the edge with a simple picot round instead of scallops.

— Peppermint Swirl Circle (Make 80, royal blue and white) :

Work Rounds 1 to 13 in a continuous spiral without joining and mark the first stitch of each round. Each round is written as a repeat worked 8 times. The color line under each round tells you how the stitches of ONE repeat are colored, in order, counting both stitches of the increase. Carry the unused color inside your stitches and change color in the last yarn over of the stitch before. If a color change falls inside an increase, make the first stitch in one color and the second in the next.
Round 1: With white, make a MR, 8 sc in the ring. Pull tight. (8)
Round 2: Inc in each st around, all white. (16)
Round 3: *Sc in next st, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 blue, 2 white. (24)
Round 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 blue, 3 white. (32)
Round 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 white, 2 blue, 2 white. (40)
Round 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 white, 2 blue, 3 white. (48)
Round 7: *Sc in next 5 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 white, 3 blue, 3 white. (56)
Round 8: *Sc in next 6 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 1 white, 4 blue, 3 white. (64)
Round 9: *Sc in next 7 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 2 white, 5 blue, 2 white. (72)
Round 10: *Sc in next 8 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 2 white, 6 blue, 2 white. (80)
Round 11: *Sc in next 9 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 3 white, 6 blue, 2 white. (88)
Round 12: *Sc in next 10 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. Color per repeat: 4 white, 7 blue, 1 white. (96)
Round 13: With white only, *sc in next 11 sts, inc in next st; rep from * 7 more times. (104)
Round 14: Sc in each st around, sl st to the first sc to join. Fasten off and weave in the blue ends. The circle measures about 6.5 inches across. (104)

— Lace Square (worked on every circle, white) :

Round 15: Join white with a standing sc in any st (this is the first of the 4 sc). *Sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 3 sts, tr in next 2 sts, (3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr) in next st, tr in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, sc in next 5 sts; rep from * 3 more times, but on the last repeat work only sc in next 4 sts at the start if you began with a standing sc. Sl st to the first sc to join. (124 sts and 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Round 16: Join white in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in same sp, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp. *Dc in next st, (ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st) 15 times, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp; rep from * 2 more times. Dc in next st, (ch 1, skip next st, dc in next st) 15 times. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3 to join. (80 dc, 60 ch-1 sps and 4 corner ch-2 sps)
Round 17: Sl st into the next corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in same sp, ch 2, 2 dc in same sp. *Dc in each of the next 35 dc and ch-1 sps along the side, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner sp; rep from * 2 more times. Dc in each of the next 35 dc and ch-1 sps. Sl st to top of beginning ch 3 to join. Fasten off. The square measures about 10 inches. (156 dc and 4 corner ch-2 sps, 39 dc between corner sps on every side)

— Layout :

Arrange the 80 squares in 10 rows of 8 squares (8 squares wide, 10 squares long). All squares are identical, so there is no color planning to do. The blue swirls should all turn the same way.
Each seam between two squares is 41 stitches long: the 39 dc plus the 2 corner ch-2 sps.

— Edge (worked around the whole cover) :

Edge Round 1 (white): Join white in any outer corner ch-2 sp. Work 3 sc in each of the 4 outer corner sps. Along the 8-square sides, sc in each of the 39 dc of each square and 1 sc in each of the 2 corner sps at every seam (2 sc per seam). Along the 10-square sides, work the same way. Each 8-square side has 312 dc plus 14 seam sc plus 3 corner sc (329); each 10-square side has 390 dc plus 18 seam sc plus 3 corner sc (411). Sl st to join. (1,480 sc)
Edge Round 2 (royal blue): Join royal blue in any sc. Ch 1, sc in each sc around, sl st to join. (1,480 sc)
Edge Round 3 (royal blue): Ch 1, sc in the same st. *Skip next st, 3 dc in next st, skip next st, sl st in next st; rep from * until you reach the start, ending with a sl st in the first st. Each repeat uses 4 sts, so you make 370 scallops. Fasten off and weave in the end. (370 scallops, 1,480 sts)
The corners will not all land in the same place of a scallop. That is fine, the edge flows around them.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Weave in all ends on the squares and block each one lightly to about 10 inches so they all match.
  2. Lay the 80 squares on a bed or floor in 10 rows of 8, with the swirls all turning the same way.
  3. With white and a yarn needle, join the squares of each row with a whip stitch through the back loops, 41 stitches per seam, matching the corner spaces.
  4. Join the 10 rows together in the same way. Seams that meet in a corner should line up neatly.
  5. Work Edge Round 1 in white around the whole cover, with 3 sc in each outer corner.
  6. Work Edge Round 2 in royal blue, then Edge Round 3 for the scalloped edge.
  7. Weave in the last ends and block the whole cover flat to the final size.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Counting the color blocks without counting both stitches of each increase makes the swirl crooked, so count the increase stitches as part of the block.

Pulling the carried yarn too tight causes the circle to cup, so keep the carried strand relaxed inside the stitches.

Joining squares with different sizes makes the cover wavy, so block every square to the same size before you sew.

Letting the swirl turn the other way on some circles breaks the look, so always follow the color lines exactly.

Important Notes

Gauge: Rounds 1 to 14 should make a circle about 6.5 inches across, and each finished square about 10 inches. Use a smaller or larger hook if yours is off, as the stitch counts depend on it.

Yarn amounts are estimated. Buy extra of each color from the same dye lot.

Block the squares and the finished cover so the lace opens and the swirls lie flat.

Wash gently in cold water with a color catcher, because the blue and white yarns are used side by side. Lay flat to dry.

I hope you enjoy making these little peppermint swirls as much as I do. Make a cup of tea, pick up your hook and start with just one circle.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 82 by 102 inches (208 by 259 cm) with 80 squares in 10 rows of 8. It fits a queen bed with a short drop, or a full bed with a longer one.

Can I use another yarn weight or make it a different size?

Yes. Thinner yarn gives smaller squares, so you will need more of them, and thicker yarn gives larger ones. For a baby blanket make 3 by 4 squares, and for a sofa throw 5 by 6.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then lay it flat to dry. Cotton can stretch when wet, so never hang it.
