About This Navy and Lime Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 94 round medallions in deep navy and bright lime green. Each circle has a lime center, alternating navy and lime rings and a wide lime outer ring. The medallions are joined in staggered rows with chain loops, which leaves open navy lace between the circles.

A lime scalloped edge finishes the outside. It measures about 77 by 83 inches (196 by 211 cm) and is made in worsted cotton with a 4.0 mm hook. It suits crocheters who are comfortable with rounds and want a big, bold project they can make piece by piece.

Why You'll Love This Navy and Lime Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this whole bed cover is made one little circle at a time. I can carry a medallion in my bag and work on it anywhere. When one is finished I feel I have already achieved something.

Navy and lime is a happy mix, and the cover looks cheerful in a bright bedroom. It would also make a very special gift.

Switch Things Up

Try navy and cream, teal and mustard, or charcoal and coral for a different mood. For a baby blanket, make 4 rows of 4 and 3 medallions in a nested layout, which gives a cot-size piece. For a sofa throw, work 7 rows alternating 5 and 4 medallions. You can also make a matching pillow cover from 4 medallions, or finish the edge with a simple round of single crochet if you prefer a calmer border.

— Medallion (Make 94, lime and navy) :

Each medallion is worked in the round, changing color as shown. Change color by pulling the new color through the last loop of the round before. Weave in ends as you go.
Round 1 (lime): Make a magic ring, ch 1, work 12 sc in the ring, join with a sl st to the first sc and pull the ring tight. (12 sc)
Round 2 (navy): Join navy with a sl st in any sc, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same st, 2 dc in each remaining sc around, join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (24 dc)
Round 3 (navy): Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next dc, *sc in next dc, ch 3, skip next dc*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch-3 sps)
Round 4 (lime): Join lime with a sl st in any ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1*, repeat from * 11 times more, join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (12 groups of 3 dc, 12 ch-1 sps, 36 dc)
Round 5 (navy): Join navy with a sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, ch 5, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch-5 loops)
Round 6 (lime): Join lime with a sl st in any ch-5 loop, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 5 dc in same loop, 6 dc in each remaining ch-5 loop around, join with a sl st to the top of the ch 3. (12 shells of 6 dc, 72 dc)
Round 7 (lime): Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 4, skip next 2 dc, *sc in next dc, ch 4, skip next 2 dc*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc, 24 ch-4 loops)
Round 8 (navy): Join navy with a sl st in any ch-4 loop, ch 1, sc in same loop, ch 6, *sc in next ch-4 loop, ch 6*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. Number the ch-6 loops 1 to 24 starting with the first one. (24 sc, 24 ch-6 loops)
Joining: the 6 joining loops are loops 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 and 21. Where a medallion touches an already finished one, work ch 3 instead of ch 6, sl st in the matching ch-6 loop of the neighbor, then ch 3. Loop 13 joins to the left neighbor's loop 1, loop 17 joins to the upper left neighbor's loop 5, and loop 21 joins to the upper right neighbor's loop 9. Every other loop stays a plain ch-6 loop.

— Layout and Joining :

Row 1: Make 9 medallions side by side, joining each one to the one before it at loops 13 and 1. (9 medallions)
Row 2: Make 8 medallions that sit in the dips between the medallions of Row 1. The first one joins to the first two medallions above it, each following one joins to the left neighbor and the two above. (8 medallions)
Rows 3 to 11: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 four more times, then work one last row like Row 1. Odd rows have 9 medallions and even rows have 8. (6 rows of 9 and 5 rows of 8, 94 medallions in total)
All medallions are identical, so there is no color placement to track. The six spots where circles meet stay open and lacy, as shown in the photo.

— Edge (Lime) :

The outer edge has 420 free ch-6 loops and 36 joins where two edge medallions meet. Do not work into the small open notches between joined medallions.
Round 1: Join lime with a sl st in any free ch-6 loop on the outer edge. Work 7 dc in each of the 420 free ch-6 loops, and 1 sc in each of the 36 joins on the outer edge, going all the way around. Join with a sl st to the first st. (2,976 sts: 2,940 dc and 36 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts, *sc in next st, skip next 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip next 2 sts*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (496 scallops, each made of 5 dc, from 496 repeats of 6 sts)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make the first medallion as written, with no joins, and block it to check that it measures about 9 inches (23 cm) across.
  2. Work Row 1 left to right, joining each new medallion to the one before it as you crochet Round 8.
  3. Start Row 2 so the first medallion sits in the dip between the first two medallions of Row 1, and join it at both of them.
  4. Continue row by row, joining each new medallion to the left neighbor and to the medallions above it, until you have 94 medallions in 11 rows.
  5. Weave in all the ends and block the whole cover flat with pins, so the circles stay round and the lace loops open evenly.
  6. Work the two edge rounds in lime around the whole outer edge, then steam the scallops lightly so they lie flat.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Joining at the wrong loop makes the rows twist, so mark loops 1, 5, 9, 13, 17 and 21 on your first medallion before you start joining.

Pulling the ch-6 loops too tight in Round 8 makes the cover pucker, so keep the chains loose and even.

Working the edge into the small notches between medallions makes the border ruffle, so only work into the free outer loops and the joins.

Changing hook size or yarn midway changes the size of the circles, so make all medallions with the same hook and the same yarn.

Important Notes

Gauge: Round 6 should measure about 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) across and the finished medallion about 9 inches (23 cm). Make and block one swatch medallion first, because sizes and yarn amounts are estimated from the photo.

Block each section flat to open the lace and set the scallops, and check the stitch counts once before you work the edge.

Wash gently in cool water on a delicate cycle with a color catcher, because navy and lime yarns can bleed together, and dry flat.

I hope you enjoy making these happy circles as much as I did dreaming them up. Take your time, one medallion at a time, and send me a photo of your cover when it is done.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 77 by 83 inches (196 by 211 cm) with 94 medallions. Add or remove rows to fit your mattress and the drop you want.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. A lighter yarn gives smaller medallions, so you will need more of them, and a bulkier yarn gives bigger circles and fewer of them. Make one swatch medallion and measure it before you decide.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash gently in cool water with a color catcher and dry flat. Cotton yarn is sturdy, but avoid hot water so the navy does not bleed onto the lime.
