Bold and Elegant

Black lace and deep burgundy roses make a dramatic bedroom.

About This Black and Burgundy Rose Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 90 round black lace medallions, and every medallion has a burgundy ring and a raised burgundy rose in the center. The medallions are joined in a 9 by 10 grid at four points each, and a small burgundy star fills every gap between four circles.

It measures about 81 by 90 inches (206 by 229 cm) and is made in worsted cotton with a 4.0 mm hook. The scalloped circles form the edge, so there is no border to add. It suits crocheters who are comfortable with rounds and want a dramatic heirloom to make piece by piece.

Why You'll Love This Black and Burgundy Rose Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love how the deep burgundy glows against the black lace. Each medallion is a small project that fits in a bag, so I can work on one wherever I am.

Roses are always special to me, and a rose in every circle makes this cover feel like a bouquet for the bed. It would make a very special gift or a keepsake.

Switch Things Up

Try charcoal gray with dusty rose, navy with cream roses, or forest green with gold for a different mood. For a baby blanket, join 4 by 5 medallions in soft pastel colors. For a sofa throw, make 5 by 6 medallions. You can also make a matching pillow cover from 4 medallions and 3 stars, or work each medallion without the rose for a lighter lace look.

— Lace Medallion (Make 90, black with burgundy ring) :

Each medallion is worked in the round with the right side facing you. Do not turn at the end of a round. The rose is made separately and sewn over the center.
Round 1 (black): Make a magic ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with a sl st to the first sc and pull the ring tight. (12 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each sc around, join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next st, *sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (12 sc, 12 ch-3 sps)
Round 4: Sl st in first ch-3 sp, ch 1, (sc, ch 4, sc, ch 4) in each ch-3 sp around, join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc, 24 ch-4 loops)
Round 5 (burgundy): Join burgundy with a sl st in any ch-4 loop, ch 1, (sc, dc, sc) in same loop and in each ch-4 loop around, join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 groups of 3 sts, 72 sts)
Round 6 (black): Join black with a sl st in any st, ch 1, sc in same st, ch 5, skip next 2 sts, *sc in next st, ch 5, skip next 2 sts*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (24 sc, 24 ch-5 loops)
Round 7: Sl st in first ch-5 loop, ch 1, (sc, 4 dc, sc) in each ch-5 loop around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Number the 24 scallops 1 to 24, starting with the first one. (24 scallops of 6 sts, 144 sts)
Joining: scallops 1, 7, 13 and 19 are the joining scallops. Where a medallion touches an already finished one, work these scallops as (sc, 2 dc, sl st in the space between the 2nd and 3rd dc of the neighbor's matching scallop, 2 dc, sc). The sl st does not count as a stitch. Scallop 13 joins to the left neighbor's scallop 1, and scallop 19 joins to the upper neighbor's scallop 7. Scallops 1 and 7 stay free, because the next medallions join to them.

— Rose (Make 90, burgundy) :

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with a sl st to the first sc and pull the ring tight. (10 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next st, *sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (5 sc, 5 ch-3 sps)
Round 3: Sl st in the first ch-3 sp, ch 1, then work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-3 sp around, join with a sl st to the first sc. These are the inner petals. (5 petals of 7 sts, 35 sts)
Round 4: Working behind the petals of Round 3, sl st around the post of the first sc of Round 2, ch 1, sc in same sc, ch 5, *sc in next sc of Round 2, ch 5*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (5 sc, 5 ch-5 loops)
Round 5: Sl st in the first ch-5 loop, ch 1, then work (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-5 loop around, join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. The rose measures about 3 inches (7.5 cm) across. (5 petals of 9 sts, 45 sts)

— Star (Make 72, burgundy) :

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, 8 sc in ring, join with a sl st to the first sc and pull the ring tight. (8 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip next st, *sc in next st, ch 3, skip next st*, repeat from * to end of round, join with a sl st to the first sc. (4 sc, 4 ch-3 sps)
Round 3: Sl st in the first ch-3 sp, ch 1, then work (sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) in each ch-3 sp around, join with a sl st to the first sc and fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. These are the 4 points of the star. (4 points of 7 sts, 28 sts)

— Layout and Joining :

Roses: Sew one rose to the center of each medallion, over the middle of Round 1 and Round 2, with the long tail. (90 roses sewn on)
Row 1: Make 9 medallions side by side, joining each one to the one before it at scallops 13 and 1. (9 medallions)
Rows 2 to 10: Make 9 medallions in each row, joining each one to the left neighbor at scallop 13 and to the medallion above at scallop 19. (9 rows of 9, 81 medallions)
Check: You now have 10 rows of 9 medallions in a grid. (90 medallions)
Stars: Sew one star into each gap where four medallions meet, with each point toward a joint. Whip stitch each point to the joint and the sides of the star to the nearest scallops. (8 gaps across by 9 gaps down, 72 stars)

— Edge :

The scalloped circles around the outside are the edge of the cover, so no border round is needed. Weave in the ends and block the cover flat so every scallop lies smooth. If you want a firmer edge, work one round of sc in burgundy into the outer scallops, and check the count with your own cover first.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make all 90 roses and 72 stars first, so you have them ready when the medallions are finished.
  2. Work Row 1 of medallions left to right, joining each new medallion to the one before it as you crochet Round 7.
  3. Work the next rows the same way, joining each medallion to its left neighbor and to the medallion above it, until you have 90 medallions in 10 rows of 9.
  4. Sew one rose to the center of every medallion, so each rose covers the middle of the lace.
  5. Sew a star into every gap between four medallions, with each point toward a joint.
  6. Weave in all the ends and block the whole cover flat with pins, so the circles stay round and the scallops lie smooth.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Joining at the wrong scallop makes the circles twist out of line, so mark scallops 1, 7, 13 and 19 on your first medallion before you start joining.

Pulling the ch-5 loops in Round 6 too tight makes the medallion cup instead of lying flat, so keep the chains relaxed and even.

Sewing the roses on off center makes the grid look crooked, so mark the center of each medallion with a pin before you sew.

Making the medallions with different hook sizes changes the size of the circles, so use the same hook and the same yarn for all 90.

Important Notes

Gauge: a finished medallion should measure about 9.5 inches (24 cm) across and a rose about 3 inches (7.5 cm). Make one swatch medallion with a rose first, because sizes and yarn amounts are estimated from the photo.

Block each medallion before you join it, because it is much easier to keep the scallops even on a small piece than on the whole cover.

Wash gently in cool water on a delicate cycle with a color catcher, because deep burgundy and black can bleed, and dry flat.

I hope you enjoy stitching these roses as much as I did. Take your time, one medallion at a time, and send me a photo of your cover when it is done.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 81 by 90 inches (206 by 229 cm) with 90 medallions. Add or remove rows and columns to fit your mattress and the drop you want.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. A lighter yarn gives smaller medallions, so you will need more of them, and a bulkier yarn gives bigger circles and fewer of them. Make one swatch medallion and measure it before you decide.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat. Use a color catcher the first few times, because dark yarns can bleed when they are new.
