About This Floral Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 102 six-lobed flower medallions in one soft dusty rose. Each medallion has arched fan rounds and an open ladder round, and the medallions are joined tip to tip in offset rows. A small five-petal flower fills every gap between them.

It finishes at about 84 by 98 inches with a three-round scalloped shell edge. You work in dc, sc and ch spaces, and you join as you go. It suits crocheters who have finished a few blankets and want a big, rewarding project.

Why You'll Love This Floral Medallion Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this huge cover is really just one small medallion made again and again. I keep a few in my bag, and they are done in an evening or two.

One color keeps the stitches in the spotlight, and the flowers and lace catch the window light in the morning. It makes a bedroom feel cozy, and it is a gift someone will keep for years.

Switch Things Up

Try soft sage, cream or a deep wine for a new mood. Make only 4 rows of 5 or 6 medallions for a sofa throw, or a few more rows for a baby blanket. Crochet a medallion and edge it with the same shell border for a matching pillow cover. For a lighter edge, stop after Round 2 of the border and skip the picot arches.

— Medallion (Make 102, dusty rose) :

Each medallion has 6 lobes and measures about 9 inches tip to tip after blocking. Make your first medallion without joining to check size. Ch 3 at the start of a round counts as a dc.
Round 1: MR, ch 3, 11 dc in ring, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each remaining st around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (24 dc)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 5, skip 3 dc, sc in next dc] 5 times, ch 5, skip last 3 dc, join with sl st to first sc. (6 sc, 6 ch-5 sps)
Round 4: Sl st into first ch-5 sp, ch 3, 8 dc in same sp, [sc in next sc, 9 dc in next ch-5 sp] 5 times, sc in first sc of Round 3, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (6 fans of 9 dc = 54 dc, plus 6 sc = 60 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st, [ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc] 4 times, *sc in next sc, sc in first dc of next fan, [ch 3, skip 1 dc, sc in next dc] 4 times; repeat from * 4 more times, sc in last sc of Round 4, join with sl st to first sc. (36 sc, 24 ch-3 sps)
Round 6: Sl st into first ch-3 sp, ch 3, 4 dc in same sp, 5 dc in each of next 3 ch-3 sps, *skip next sc, sc in next sc, skip next sc, 5 dc in each of next 4 ch-3 sps; repeat from * 4 more times, skip next sc, sc in next sc, skip last sc, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (120 dc, 6 sc = 126 sts)
Round 7: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 8 dc, 2 sc in each of next 2 dc, sc in next 9 dc, sc in next sc, *sc in next 9 dc, 2 sc in each of next 2 dc, sc in next 9 dc, sc in next sc; repeat from * 4 more times, join with sl st to first sc. (6 lobes of 23 sc = 138 sc)
Round 8: Ch 3, [ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc] 11 times, *dc in next sc, [ch 1, skip 1 sc, dc in next sc] 11 times; repeat from * 4 more times, join with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. (6 lobes of 12 dc and 11 ch-1 sps = 72 dc, 66 ch-1 sps)
Round 9: Ch 1, sc in same st, [sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc] 5 times, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-1 sp, [sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, sc in next dc. *Sc in next dc, [sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next dc] 5 times, (sc, ch 3, sc) in next ch-1 sp, [sc in next dc, sc in next ch-1 sp] 5 times, sc in next dc; repeat from * 4 more times. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (6 lobes of 24 sc = 144 sc, 6 ch-3 tip sps)
The 6 ch-3 tip sps are your joining points. Weave in ends and block each medallion to about 9 inches across before joining.

— Small Flower (Make 176, dusty rose) :

Round 1: MR, ch 1, 10 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (10 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip 1 sc, [sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 1 sc] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc. (5 sc, 5 ch-3 sps)
Round 3: Sl st into first ch-3 sp. In each ch-3 sp work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, hdc, sc), then sl st in next sc of Round 2 to move to the next sp. Join and fasten off. (5 petals of 8 sts = 40 sts, 5 ch-2 tip sps)
When joining a flower, replace the ch 2 at a petal tip with ch 1, sl st in the nearest ch-1 sp of Round 8 on the neighbouring medallion, ch 1. Join the three petals that point at the three medallions and leave the other two petals loose.

— Layout :

Grid: 12 rows, alternating 9 medallions (rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11) and 8 medallions (rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12). Each row is offset by half a medallion so it nests into the row above. Total: 6 x 9 + 6 x 8 = 54 + 48 = 102 medallions, all dusty rose.
Each medallion touches up to 6 neighbours at its 6 tip ch-3 sps. Joins in total: 90 side joins plus 176 diagonal joins = 266 joins.
Small flowers: one flower sits in each triangular gap between a 9-medallion row and an 8-medallion row. That is 16 gaps per pair of rows x 11 pairs = 176 flowers.

— Border :

Join yarn at any tip of an exposed lobe. The outer edge has 80 exposed lobes: 22 in row 1, 6 in each of rows 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11, 2 in each of rows 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, and 18 in row 12. Sl st across each join between neighbouring medallions without counting it.
Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each of the 24 sc of every exposed lobe, working 3 sc in each tip ch-3 sp. Join with sl st to first sc. (80 lobes x 27 sc = 2,160 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, [skip 2 sc, 7 dc in next sc, skip 2 sc, sl st in next sc] 360 times, join with sl st to first st. Place a marker every 30 shells to keep the spacing even. (360 shells of 7 dc = 2,520 dc)
Round 3: Sl st to the first dc of a shell, ch 1, [sc in first dc of shell, (ch 2, sc in next dc) 6 times, skip the sl st between shells] 360 times, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (360 x 7 sc = 2,520 sc, 2,160 ch-2 sps)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make and block all 102 medallions and all 176 small flowers.
  2. Lay the medallions out on a large clean floor in 12 rows, alternating 9 and 8 medallions, with each row offset by half a medallion.
  3. Join the medallions in rows. On Round 9 of each new medallion, replace the ch 3 at each touching tip with ch 1, sl st in the matching tip ch-3 sp of the neighbour, ch 1.
  4. Join the rows together the same way, using the diagonal tips, until all 266 joins are done.
  5. Place a small flower in each triangular gap and join three petal tips to the ch-1 sps of the surrounding medallions.
  6. Wet block the whole cover flat, pinning it to about 84 by 98 inches, and let it dry fully.
  7. Work Rounds 1 to 3 of the Border around the whole outer edge, then weave in all ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the blocking of single medallions makes the joins pucker, so block each one to about 9 inches before you join.

Joining medallions to the wrong tip makes the rows twist, so keep the layout plan in view and join the same tip numbers each time.

Counting the fans in Round 4 incorrectly throws off every round after it, so check for 6 fans of 9 dc before moving on.

Changing the layout without recounting the border can break the shell repeat, so keep an even number of exposed lobes and multiply the lobes by 27.

Important Notes

With a 4.0 mm hook and worsted cotton, a blocked medallion measures about 9 inches tip to tip. Swatch one medallion first and change your hook size if yours differs.

Sizes, yarn amounts and edge counts are estimated, so test one medallion and one flower before you buy all your yarn.

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat. This cover uses one color, so no color catcher is needed, but use one if you try dark and light yarns together.

I hope this cover brings as much warmth to your bedroom as it does to mine. Take it one medallion at a time, and enjoy every flower.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

The cover is about 84 by 98 inches with the border, using 102 medallions in 12 rows. For a throw, make fewer rows and recount the border.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. A thinner yarn gives smaller medallions, so you would need more of them for the same size, and a thicker yarn gives larger ones. Swatch a medallion first and adjust the layout and border counts.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash gently in cool water on a delicate cycle or by hand, reshape while damp and dry it flat. Avoid hanging it, because the lace stretches when wet.
