Raised Flower Look

A deep raspberry cover with a flower in every block and a petal scallop edge.

About This Flower Mesh Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 120 square filet mesh blocks in one deep raspberry rose. Each block is worked in rows of dc and ch-2 spaces, finished with a round of sc, and topped with a raised five-petal flower with an open center. The blocks are joined with a sc seam that makes a neat raised ridge.

It finishes at about 82 by 98 inches with a scalloped edge of little flower petals. You work in dc, sc and hdc, and everything is joined with a plain seam. It suits crocheters who have finished a few blankets and want a big, rewarding project.

Why You'll Love This Flower Mesh Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this big cover is really just one small square made again and again. I keep a block and a flower in my bag, and each one is done in an evening or two.

One deep color lets the mesh and the flowers do all the talking, and the open spaces catch the window light. It makes a bedroom feel warm and cozy, and it is a gift someone will keep for years.

Switch Things Up

Try soft sage, cream or a dusty blue for a new mood. Make 5 by 6 blocks for a sofa throw, or 6 by 8 for a baby blanket. Make a matching pillow cover from 2 by 3 blocks with the same petal edge. For a lighter look, use a different flower color on each block, or stop after Round 1 of the border for a plain edge.

— Mesh Block (Make 120, raspberry rose) :

Each block is worked flat in rows and measures about 8 inches square after blocking. Ch 3 at the start of a row counts as a dc.
Row 1: Ch 36, dc in 6th ch from hook, [ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch] 10 times. (12 dc, 11 ch-2 sps)
Rows 2 to 14: Ch 3, turn, [ch 2, dc in next dc] 10 times, ch 2, dc in top of the turning ch-3 of the row below. Repeat for 13 rows. (12 dc, 11 ch-2 sps in every row)
Round 15 (Edging): Turn the block so Row 14 is at the top and the right side faces you. Join yarn in the top right corner st, ch 1, 3 sc in same st. [2 sc in next ch-2 sp, sc in next dc] 10 times, 2 sc in next ch-2 sp (32 sc), 3 sc in the top left corner st. Work 2 sc in the end of each of the next 12 rows (24 sc), 3 sc in the bottom left corner st. Sc in each of the next 32 foundation ch (32 sc), 3 sc in the bottom right corner st. Work 2 sc in the end of each of the next 12 rows (24 sc). Join with sl st to first sc and fasten off. (4 corners x 3 sc + 2 x 32 + 2 x 24 = 124 sc)
Block each square to about 8 by 8 inches. If yours is taller or shorter than wide, add or remove a row and recount the 2 sc per row on each side.

— Flower (Make 120, raspberry rose) :

Round 1: Ch 5, sl st in first ch to form a ring. (5 ch)
Round 2: Ch 1, 15 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc. (15 sc)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 3, skip 2 sc, [sc in next sc, ch 3, skip 2 sc] 4 times, join with sl st to first sc. (5 sc, 5 ch-3 sps)
Round 4: Sl st into first ch-3 sp. In each ch-3 sp work (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc), then sl st in next sc between petals. Join, fasten off and leave a long tail. (5 petals of 9 sts = 45 sts)
Pin one flower in the center of each block and sew it on through the petal bases with the tail. Keep the center ring open so the mesh shows through.

— Layout :

Grid: 10 blocks across x 12 blocks down = 120 blocks, all raspberry rose, each with one flower (120 flowers). Keep the Row 14 side of every block pointing the same way.
Join the blocks into 12 strips of 10 blocks with side seams, then join the strips with top and bottom seams. Side seam: 26 sc (corner center to corner center with 24 between). Top and bottom seam: 34 sc (corner center to corner center with 32 between).
Total joins: 12 strips x 9 side seams = 108, plus 11 strip seams x 10 blocks = 110.

— Border :

Join yarn at any outer corner. Along the top and bottom edges each block has 32 edge sc, plus 1 sc at every seam between blocks. Along the sides each block has 24 edge sc, plus 1 sc at every seam.
Round 1: Ch 1, 3 sc in each outer corner. Work 1 sc in each edge sc and 1 sc in each seam. Join with sl st to first sc. (top 10 x 32 + 9 = 329, bottom 329, each side 12 x 24 + 11 = 299, 4 corners x 3 = 12: 329 x 2 + 299 x 2 + 12 = 1,268 sc)
Round 2: Ch 1, [skip 1 sc, (sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) in next sc, skip 1 sc, sl st in next sc] 317 times, join with sl st to first st. Fasten off. (317 petals of 9 sts = 2,853 sts, 1,268 / 4 = 317 repeats)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make and block all 120 mesh blocks and all 120 flowers.
  2. Sew one flower in the center of each block, keeping the center ring open.
  3. Lay the blocks out on a large clean floor in 12 rows of 10 blocks, with every block turned the same way.
  4. Join the blocks into 12 strips with side seams. Hold two blocks wrong sides together and sc through the back loops of both, corner center to corner center, for 26 sc.
  5. Join the 12 strips with top and bottom seams of 34 sc each, matching the corners so the grid lines up.
  6. Wet block the whole cover flat, pinning it to about 80 by 96 inches, and let it dry fully.
  7. Work Rounds 1 and 2 of the Border around the whole outer edge, then weave in all ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Skipping the blocking makes the mesh blocks uneven, so block each square to the same size before you join.

Turning some blocks the other way makes the seams twist and the grid wobble, so keep the Row 14 side facing the same way.

Miscounting the row ends in Round 15 makes the seams pucker, so check for 24 sc down each side.

Changing the layout without recounting the border breaks the petal repeat, so recalculate the total and make sure it divides by 4.

Important Notes

With a 4.0 mm hook and worsted cotton, a blocked block measures about 8 inches square. Swatch one block and one flower first and change your hook size if yours differs.

Sizes, yarn amounts and edge counts are estimated, so test one block before you buy all your yarn.

Wash gently in cool water and dry flat. This cover uses one color, so no color catcher is needed, but use one if you try dark and light yarns together.

I hope this cover brings as much warmth to your bedroom as it does to mine. Take it one block at a time, and enjoy every flower.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

The cover is about 82 by 98 inches with the border, using 120 blocks in 12 rows of 10. For a throw, make fewer blocks and recount the border.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes. A thinner yarn gives smaller blocks, so you would need more of them for the same size, and a thicker yarn gives larger ones. Swatch a block first and adjust the layout and border counts.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash gently in cool water on a delicate cycle or by hand, reshape while damp and dry it flat. Avoid hanging it, because the mesh stretches when wet.
