Garden in Bed

Big red roses on soft cream make a romantic bedroom.

About This Cream and Red Rose Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 36 cream granny squares, each 16 inches wide, outlined in burgundy. A big three-dimensional rose sits in the center of every square, with four green leaves around it. The squares are joined with burgundy, so thin red lines run across the cover like a garden path.

It finishes at about 100 by 100 inches, a generous king size that falls over the sides of the bed. The edge is a cream shell scallop outlined in burgundy, with small roses sewn along it. It suits anyone who loves roses and wants a romantic heirloom piece for the bedroom.

Why You'll Love This Cream and Red Rose Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this project because every part is small. A square, a rose or a leaf fits in my bag, and I can crochet them in the car, on the sofa or at a friend's house.

Watching the flat strip roll into a rose never gets old. The cream squares keep the bed bright, and the red roses make it feel like a wedding gift you can sleep under.

Switch Things Up

Try dusty pink roses on cream for a softer look, or deep navy squares with cream roses. Make 4 columns by 5 rows (20 squares) for a throw of about 64 by 80 inches. Use one square, one rose and four leaves for a matching pillow cover. Skip the small edge roses for a simpler, faster finish.

Each side of the finished square has 11 groups of 3 dc and 10 ch-1 sps. Weave in ends and block every square to 16 inches. If your square is smaller, go up a hook size.

— Large Rose (Make 36, rose red) :

Foundation: Ch 97. (97 ch)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (96 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. *Sl st in next sc, skip next sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next sc*, repeat from * 23 more times (24 times total). (24 petals, 120 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, rotate the strip to work into the unused loops of the foundation ch. *Sl st in next loop, skip next loop, 5 dc in next loop, skip next loop*, repeat from * 23 more times (24 times total). Fasten off, leaving a 24 inch tail. (24 petals, 120 dc)
To shape the rose, start at the first sl st end and roll the strip tightly with the petals facing up. Sew the base as you roll, using the long tail. The finished rose is about 6 inches wide.

— Small Rose (Make 33, rose red) :

Foundation: Ch 49. (49 ch)
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (48 sc)
Row 2: Ch 1, turn. *Sl st in next sc, skip next sc, 5 dc in next sc, skip next sc*, repeat from * 11 more times (12 times total). (12 petals, 60 dc)
Row 3: Ch 1, rotate the strip to work into the unused loops of the foundation ch. *Sl st in next loop, skip next loop, 5 dc in next loop, skip next loop*, repeat from * 11 more times (12 times total). Fasten off, leaving a 12 inch tail. (12 petals, 60 dc)
Roll and sew in the same way as the large rose. The finished rose is about 3 inches wide.

— Leaf (Make 144, olive green) :

Leaf: Ch 10. Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch. Working along the other side of the foundation ch: sc in next ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 3 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch. Fasten off, leaving a 6 inch tail. (19 sts)

— Layout and Joining :

Lay out 6 rows of 6 squares. All 36 squares are the same, so the roses line up in a clean grid.
Rows 1 to 6: 6 squares in every row (6 squares)
Join with burgundy. Hold two squares with wrong sides together and sl st through the back loops only, working in each dc, ch-1 sp and corner sp, so a raised burgundy line shows on the right side. Join the squares into 6 strips of 6, then join the 6 strips.
Sew one large rose to the center of every square. Sew one leaf above, below, left and right of each rose, with the tips pointing away from the rose.

— Border :

Round 1 (cream): With right side facing, join cream in any outer corner sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the corner sp. *Sc in each dc and each ch-1 sp across the square (43 sc). At each seam, sc in the corner sp, sc in the seam, sc in the next corner sp (3 sc)*, repeat across the side. Work 3 sc in each outer corner sp. Join with sl st to first sc. (1,104 sc: 273 sc along each side plus 3 sc in each of 4 corners)
Round 2 (cream): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the center sc of each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. (1,112 sc)
Round 3 (cream): Ch 1, sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the center sc of each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. (1,120 sc)
Round 4 (cream): Ch 1. *Sl st in next sc, skip next 3 sc, 7 dc in next sc, skip next 3 sc*, repeat from * for 140 repeats. Join with sl st to first sl st. Fasten off. (140 shells, 980 dc)
Round 5 (burgundy): Join burgundy in any sl st between two shells. Ch 1, sc in same sl st. *Sc in each of the 7 dc of the next shell, sc in the sl st after the shell*, repeat from * for 140 shells, ending the last repeat in the first sl st. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off. (1,120 sc)
Border check: 6 squares x 43 sc = 258, plus 5 seams x 3 sc = 15, gives 273 sc per side. 4 sides x 273 = 1,092, plus 12 corner sc = 1,104. Each corner adds 2 sc in rounds 2 and 3, giving 1,120, which divides by 8 into 140 shells. If a shell does not land on a corner, shift your starting point by one or two sc.
Sew 33 small roses along the border, 11 on each of the foot and the two side edges, spaced evenly over the shells (about every third shell).

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make 36 granny squares, working rounds 1 to 10 in cream and round 11 in burgundy.
  2. Make 36 large roses, 33 small roses and 144 leaves.
  3. Weave in all ends and block every square to 16 inches so the corners are sharp and the sizes match.
  4. Lay the squares out in 6 rows of 6 and take a photo so you do not lose the order.
  5. Join each row into a strip with burgundy, then join the 6 strips together, matching the corners carefully.
  6. Sew a large rose to the center of every square and four leaves around it.
  7. Work Border Rounds 1 to 5 to make the scalloped edge, then sew the 33 small roses along the foot and the two sides.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Losing the corners in the squares. Count the corner sps after every round, and check that round 11 has 132 dc.

Rolling the rose too loosely, which makes it look flat. Roll the strip tightly and sew the base every half turn.

Pulling the burgundy seams too tight, which puckers the cover. Keep the joining stitches loose and the same tension as the squares.

Losing count in the border. Place a marker at each corner and check the stitch total after Round 1.

Important Notes

Each square should measure 16 inches after blocking with a 5.0 mm hook. Make one test square and one rose before you buy all the yarn.

Yarn amounts are estimates. Buy a little extra cream and rose red to be safe.

Wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, because red and burgundy can bleed onto cream. Dry flat or tumble dry on low.

I hope this rose cover makes your bedroom feel soft and romantic. Take it one square and one rose at a time, and enjoy watching the garden grow.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

It measures about 100 by 100 inches with the border, which covers a king size bed with a generous drop.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make it smaller?

Yes. Lighter yarn with a smaller hook makes smaller squares, so you will need more of them. For a throw, make 4 columns by 5 rows (20 squares).

How do I wash it?

Wash cold on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then dry flat or tumble dry on low. Wash it on its own the first time.
