You will need to be at ease with two-color rounds, treble crochet and popcorn stitches.

Long Project

Plan on about 320 to 400 hours, spread over several months.

Portable Motifs

Each swirl is small enough to crochet on the sofa or on the go.

About This Burgundy and Cream Swirl Motif Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bedspread is built from 90 round swirl motifs, each about 10 inches across, with a cream spiral arm curling through a deep burgundy center. An open ring of long spokes and a rim of cream popcorn stitches finish every motif. The motifs are joined as you go, 72 small burgundy fillers close the gaps, and a scalloped cream edge goes around the outside.

The finished size is about 90 by 100 inches, enough to cover a queen bed and drape to the floor. You will use a magic ring, two-color rounds, treble crochet spokes and popcorn stitches, so it suits crocheters who have already finished a few motif projects.

Why You'll Love This Burgundy and Cream Swirl Motif Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this big bedspread is really just one small swirl made again and again. I can finish a motif in an evening, tuck it in a bag and start the next one anywhere. Watching the burgundy and cream spirals pile up is the best motivation I know.

It also makes a cozy bedroom heirloom. The deep wine red and soft cream feel warm in every season, and the lacy spokes let the light through.

Switch Things Up

Try navy and cream, forest green and ivory, or dusty rose and gray for a new look. Make only 5 motifs across and 6 down for a throw of about 50 by 60 inches, or one motif alone as a large coaster or a doily. You can also crochet a single motif onto a pillow cover to match, or skip the scalloped border and finish with one round of single crochet for a flatter edge.

— Swirl Motif (Make 90, burgundy and cream) :

Each motif is worked in the round with the right side always facing you. Join every round with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3 unless told otherwise.
Making the swirl: from Round 2 to Round 7, one arc of stitches is worked in cream and the rest in burgundy. The cream arc starts 3 stitches later in each round, which turns the two colors into a spiral. Carry the unused color loosely behind the work or crochet over it.
Popcorn: 5 dc in the same space, drop the loop from the hook, insert the hook in the first dc of the group, pick up the dropped loop and pull it through. When Round 10 starts with ch 3, that ch-3 counts as the first dc of the popcorn.
Rnd 1: In burgundy, make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in the ring, join. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same st, 2 dc in each remaining st around, join. Work sts 1 to 12 in burgundy and sts 13 to 24 in cream. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat 11 times, join. Work sts 16 to 33 in cream, the rest in burgundy. (36 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat 11 times, join. Work sts 19 to 42 in cream, the rest in burgundy. (48 dc)
Rnd 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat 11 times, join. Work sts 22 to 51 in cream, the rest in burgundy. (60 dc)
Rnd 6: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in next st*, repeat 11 times, join. Work sts 25 to 60 in cream, the rest in burgundy. (72 dc)
Rnd 7: Ch 4 (counts as tr), ch 1, *tr in next st, ch 1*, repeat 71 times, join to the 4th ch of the beginning ch-4. Work sts 28 to 63 in cream, the rest in burgundy. (72 tr, 72 ch-1 sps)
Rnd 8: In burgundy, ch 1, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 3*, repeat 72 times, join to the first sc. (72 sc, 72 ch-3 arches)
Rnd 9: Sl st into the first ch-3 arch, ch 1, sc in the same arch, ch 5, *sc in next ch-3 arch, ch 5*, repeat 71 times, join to the first sc. (72 sc, 72 ch-5 arches)
Rnd 10: In cream, sl st into the first ch-5 arch, ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in the same arch and close the popcorn, ch 3, *popcorn in next ch-5 arch, ch 3*, repeat 71 times, join to the top of the first popcorn. Each popcorn and the ch-3 space after it is one unit; the first popcorn is unit 1. (72 popcorns, 72 ch-3 sps)
Joining as you go: on every motif after the first, replace the ch-3 of units 1 and 55 with ch 1, sl st in the matching ch-3 sp of the neighbor, ch 1. Unit 55 joins the motif on the left (its unit 19), and unit 1 joins the motif above (its unit 37). Units 19 and 37 stay open until the next motifs are added. The motif in the top left corner has no joins, and the rest of the top row joins only on unit 55.

— Gap Filler (Make 72, burgundy) :

Each small filler sits in the gap between four motifs. Make all fillers after the motifs are joined, and join them to the units that face the gap: unit 28 of the top left motif, unit 46 of the top right motif, unit 10 of the bottom left motif and unit 64 of the bottom right motif.
Rnd 1: Make a magic ring. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 11 dc in the ring, join. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same st, 2 dc in each remaining st around, join. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 dc, skip next dc, ch 2, sl st in the ch-3 sp of the matching unit on a neighboring motif, ch 2*, repeat 4 times, join to the first sc. (20 sc, 4 joins)

— Layout :

Arrange the motifs in 10 rows of 9 motifs, 90 motifs in total, all with the same spiral direction and the cream arm turning the same way. Work left to right in each row and top to bottom, joining each new motif to the one on its left and the one above it.
The gaps between four motifs number 8 across by 9 down, so 72 fillers are needed. Every motif uses the same two colors, so each of the 90 motifs takes burgundy for the center and the outer rounds and cream for the swirl arm and the popcorn rim.
Outer edge count: each corner motif has 53 free units and each side motif has 35. The top row has 2 corner motifs and 7 side motifs, so 2 x 53 + 7 x 35 = 351 units, and the bottom row also has 351. The 8 middle rows have 2 x 35 = 70 units each, so 560 units. Add the 34 join points on the outer edge (8 along the top, 8 along the bottom, 9 on each side). 351 + 351 + 560 + 34 = 1296 units.

— Border :

The border follows the scalloped outline of the outer motifs. Treat each join point as one space. Place a stitch marker every 36 spaces so you can check your progress, 36 markers in all, because 1296 divides evenly by 36.
Rnd 1: In burgundy, join in any ch-3 sp on the outer edge. Ch 1, *sc in next ch-3 sp or join point, ch 3 over the popcorn*, repeat around the whole outer edge, join to the first sc. (1296 sc, 1296 ch-3 sps)
Rnd 2: In cream, join in any ch-3 sp, ch 3 (counts as dc), 4 dc in the same sp, sc in next sc, *5 dc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next sc*, repeat 1295 times, join to the top of the beginning ch-3. (1296 five-dc shells, 1296 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Crochet one Swirl Motif first, block it and check that it measures about 10 inches across before making the other 89.
  2. Lay the motifs out on a large floor or a bed in 10 rows of 9, keeping the spiral direction the same in every motif.
  3. Join the motifs as you go in Round 10, always to the motif on the left and the motif above, as described in the Swirl Motif section.
  4. When all 90 motifs are joined, crochet the 72 Gap Fillers and join each one to the four units that face its gap.
  5. Pin the whole piece out on blocking mats, mist it with water and let it dry flat so the swirls and spokes open evenly.
  6. Work Border Round 1 in burgundy and Border Round 2 in cream around the whole scalloped outer edge, using the 36 markers to check the count.
  7. Weave in all ends, taking special care at the color changes on the back of every motif.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Starting the cream arm at the same stitch in every round makes straight stripes instead of a swirl, so move the color change forward by 3 stitches each round.

Pulling the carried yarn too tight puckers the dc rounds, so leave a little slack behind the work.

Joining the motifs on the wrong units makes the grid twist, so mark units 1, 19, 37 and 55 with stitch markers on the first few motifs.

Skipping the stitch markers on the border makes a miscount likely, and with 1296 spaces a mistake is hard to find later.

Important Notes

Rounds 1 to 6 should measure about 7.5 inches across and the finished motif about 10 inches after blocking, so adjust your hook size if your motif is smaller or larger.

Yarn amounts and the stitch counts for the joins and border are estimated from a photo, so crochet one motif and one filler as a swatch before you start the full bedspread.

Block the finished bedspread flat, and wash it by hand or on a gentle cycle in cool water.

Because dark and light yarns are used together, wash it with a color catcher to protect the cream.

I hope you enjoy every swirl as much as I do. Take your time, and send me a picture when your bedspread is on the bed.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size of the bedspread?

With 90 motifs in 10 rows of 9 it measures about 90 by 100 inches, which covers a queen bed and drapes to the floor.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make a smaller size?

Yes. Lighter cotton makes smaller motifs and a lighter bedspread, and using fewer motifs makes a throw or a baby blanket. Recalculate the border count with the formula in the Layout section.

How do I wash and care for it?

Wash it by hand or on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, then dry it flat and reshape it while it is damp.
