About This Dusty Mauve Lace Flower Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 270 small lace flowers in one soft dusty mauve shade. Each flower has a ring center and four big rounded petals with picot edging. The flowers are joined tip to tip, which leaves open lacy spaces between them.

The finished cover measures about 78 by 93 inches (198 by 236 cm), enough to drape over a queen bed. It uses basic stitches (sc, hdc, dc) and picots, with a scalloped edge to finish. It suits a confident crocheter who enjoys a long, rewarding project.

Why You'll Love This Dusty Mauve Lace Flower Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love this project because the whole cover is just one small flower repeated. I can tuck a motif and a ball of yarn into my bag and work on it by the window, in the car or at a friend's house.

The mauve shade is calm and warm, and the lace looks beautiful on a bed with matching pillows. It also makes a gift that people will keep for years.

Switch Things Up

Try a pale sage, soft gray or warm cream yarn for a different mood. For a sofa throw, make 6 by 8 motifs (48 motifs), which gives a throw of about 30 by 40 inches before the edge. Use a lighter cotton or a fine wool blend for a baby blanket. You can also make a few extra motifs and join them in a square for a matching pillow cover, or skip the edge rounds and finish with a single round of sc.

Materials Needed

— Lace Flower Motif (Make 270, dusty mauve) :

Each motif measures about 5 inches (12.5 cm) tip to tip after blocking. Make one motif first and check the size before you make the rest. Work with the right side facing you and do not turn.
Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 15 dc in the ring, sl st to the top of the ch-3, pull the ring tight. (16 dc)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st, *ch 3, skip next dc, sc in next dc; repeat from * 6 more times, ch 3, skip last dc, sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-3 sps)
Round 3: Sl st in the first ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in the same sp, ch 5, *sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5; repeat from * 6 more times, sl st to first sc. (8 sc, 8 ch-5 sps)
Round 4: Sl st in each of the next 3 ch of the first ch-5 sp, ch 1. *In this ch-5 sp work (sc, hdc, 3 dc), in the next ch-5 sp work (3 dc, hdc, sc); repeat from * 3 more times, sl st to first sc. You now have 4 petals. (4 petals of 10 sts each: sc, hdc, 6 dc, hdc, sc = 40 sts)
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in the same st, then work 1 sc in each st around. On every petal, work a picot (ch 3, sl st in the first ch) after the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th sc of that petal. Sl st to first sc and fasten off. (40 sc, 16 picots)
Joining picots: on every petal the 2nd and 3rd picots (the ones after the 4th and 6th sc) are the joining picots. When you join, replace the ch-3 picot with: ch 1, sl st in the matching picot of the neighboring motif, ch 2, sl st in the sc you just made. The picots mirror each other, so your 2nd picot meets your neighbor's 3rd picot and your 3rd meets their 2nd.

— Layout and Joining :

Grid: 15 motifs across by 18 motifs down. (270 motifs in total, all dusty mauve)
Strip: Make the first motif of a strip with regular picots. For each next motif, join its left petal to the right petal of the previous motif at the 2 joining picots while working Round 5. Make 18 strips of 15 motifs. (18 strips, 15 motifs each)
Joining strips: Join the strips along their top and bottom petals the same way, using the 2 joining picots of each petal. Join the strips with a yarn needle if you prefer to stitch rather than join as you go. (18 strips joined, 15 columns by 18 rows)
Four motifs meet at each crossing and leave a small open diamond in the center. This is what gives the cover its lacy look. Pin the cover flat and block it before you start the edge.

— Scalloped Picot Edge :

The edge follows the outer petals. The cover has 15 petals along the top, 15 along the bottom and 18 down each side, so 66 outer petals in total. Every edge round is worked in 66 matching units, so the stitch counts below divide evenly.
Round 1: Join yarn with a sc in the first sc of an outer petal on the top edge. *Work 1 sc in each of the 10 sc of this petal (skip the picots), ch 5 across the notch before the next outer petal; repeat from * around, working the ch-5 at the corners too. Sl st to first sc. (660 sc and 66 ch-5 sps)
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the first sc of a petal. *[Ch 4, skip 2 sc, sc in next sc] 3 times, sc in the ch-5 sp, sc in the first sc of the next petal; repeat from * around, ending the last repeat with sc in the ch-5 sp, sl st to first sc. (330 sc, 198 ch-4 arches)
Round 3: Sl st in each of the next 2 ch of the first arch, ch 1. *In the arch work (sc, hdc, 2 dc, picot, 2 dc, hdc, sc), then sl st in each sc until the next arch (1 sl st between arches in the same petal, 3 sl sts across a notch); repeat from * around, sl st to first sc and fasten off. (198 shells of 8 sts each, 198 picots)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make all 270 lace flower motifs in dusty mauve. Weave in the beginning tail of every motif as you go, and leave the end tail loose if you plan to join by sewing.
  2. Lay the motifs out in 18 rows of 15 so that every petal sits against a petal of its neighbor.
  3. Join the motifs into 18 strips of 15, either as you go in Round 5 or with a yarn needle through the joining picots.
  4. Join the 18 strips together along the top and bottom petals, using the same 2 joining picots on each petal.
  5. Pin the whole cover flat on blocking mats and block it to about 75 by 90 inches before the edge.
  6. Work the 3 rounds of the scalloped picot edge around the 66 outer petals.
  7. Block the edge lightly, let everything dry completely and weave in any remaining ends.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Joining the wrong picots makes the motifs twist, so always join the 2nd picot of one petal to the 3rd picot of its neighbor and keep the right side facing you.

Working Round 4 petals too tightly makes them curl, so keep your tension relaxed and block the first motif before you decide on your hook size.

Skipping the blocking leaves a cover that does not lie flat, so block each strip or the whole cover before you start the edge.

Losing count of the outer petals changes the edge totals, so count 15 by 18 petals first and mark the corners with stitch markers.

Important Notes

Each motif should measure about 5 inches (12.5 cm) tip to tip after blocking. Make a swatch motif and adjust the hook size if yours is smaller or larger, because the final size depends on the motif size.

The yarn amounts and the size of the finished cover are estimates, so buy a little extra yarn from the same dye lot.

Block the cover with wet blocking and pins so the petals lie flat and the lace opens up.

Wash gently by hand or on a delicate cycle in cool water and dry flat. Mercerized cotton is heavy when wet, so lift it with both hands.

I hope you enjoy making these little flowers as much as I did. Take your time, make one motif at a time, and send me a photo when your bed cover is finished.

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bed cover?

With 15 by 18 motifs and the edge, it measures about 78 by 93 inches (198 by 236 cm), which drapes over a queen bed. The size depends on your motif size and blocking.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make a different size?

Yes. A heavier yarn and a larger hook make bigger motifs, so you need fewer of them. To change the size, keep the motif count a whole number of columns and rows, then recount the outer petals for the edge.

How do I wash and care for this cover?

Wash it gently by hand or on a delicate cycle in cool water, and dry it flat. Do not hang it wet, because the weight of the cotton can stretch the lace.
