Intermediate Level

You need double crochet, crossed double crochet and fan stitches.

60-80 Hours

Every row is simple, so you can settle into a rhythm and watch the stripes grow.

One Piece, No Joining

The whole bedspread is worked in rows, so there are no squares to join.

About This Sage Green and Cream Striped Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bedspread is worked in one piece from side to side in stripes. Sage green crossed double crochet makes a braided band, and cream fan stitches and textured rows sit between the bands. A deep scalloped edge of sage fans and cream shells finishes all four sides.

It measures about 74 by 82 inches before the edge and about 82 by 90 inches with the edge, in worsted weight cotton. You only need double crochet, single crochet, slip stitch and a foundation chain, so it suits anyone ready for a big, steady project.

Why You'll Love This Sage Green and Cream Striped Bedspread Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love a project where the pattern repeats so naturally. After the first few stripes, I know exactly what comes next, and I can watch a TV show while the bedspread grows.

The sage and cream pair is calm and a little old-fashioned, in the best way. I like the braided bands the most, because they look so much harder than they are.

Switch Things Up

Try navy and cream, terracotta and cream, or dusty blue and cream in place of sage. For a throw, start with a chain of 177 (175 stitches) and work 8 stripe repeats plus the final sage band. For a matching pillow cover, chain 75 (73 stitches), work 3 stripe repeats and make 2 panels to sew together. You can also skip the scalloped edge and finish with a simple round of single crochet.

— Bedspread Body (one piece, cream and sage) :

Crossed dc: skip 1 st, dc in the next st, then dc in the skipped st, working in front of the first dc. Turn at the end of every row. Carry the unused color loosely up the side of the work, or fasten off and rejoin. The edge will cover the carried strands.
Foundation Row (cream): Ch 261. Dc in the 4th ch from hook (the 3 skipped chs count as the first dc) and in each ch across. (259 dc)
Stripe repeat: work Rows 1 to 10 a total of 12 times. Every row starts with ch 3, which counts as the first dc. Skip the first st of the previous row, and end every dc row with a dc in the top of the turning ch.
Row 1 (sage): Change to sage. Ch 3, *skip next st, dc in next st, dc in the skipped st; repeat from * 128 more times (129 crossed pairs). Turn. (259 dc)
Row 2 (sage): Ch 3, dc in next st, *skip next st, dc in next st, dc in the skipped st; repeat from * 127 more times (128 crossed pairs), dc in the last st. The crossed pairs are now shifted by one stitch, which makes the braid. Turn. (259 dc)
Row 3 (cream): Change to cream. Ch 3, dc in each st across. Turn. (259 dc)
Row 4 (cream fans): Ch 1, sc in the first st. *Skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, sc in next st; repeat from * 42 more times (43 times in all). Turn. (44 sc and 43 shells of 5 dc, 259 sts)
Row 5 (cream): Ch 3, skip the first sc, dc in each st across, working the last dc in the last sc. Turn. (259 dc)
Row 6 (sage): Change to sage. Work as Row 1. (259 dc)
Row 7 (sage): Work as Row 2. (259 dc)
Rows 8 to 10 (cream): Change to cream. Ch 3, dc in the back loop only of each st across, working the last dc in the top of the turning ch. Turn. Repeat this row 2 more times. (259 dc in each row)
Final band (sage): After the 12th repeat, change to sage and work Row 1 and Row 2 once more. Fasten off. You now have 123 rows including the foundation row. (259 dc in each row)
Gauge: in dc, 14 sts and 6 rows measure about 4 in (10 cm). The body should measure about 74 by 82 inches after blocking. Check that your row count is exactly 123, because the edge counts depend on it.

— Layout :

The stripes run across the width of the bed. Place the foundation row at the foot and the final sage band at the head, or turn it around, as you prefer.
In all there are 50 sage rows (12 repeats x 4 rows, plus the 2-row final band) and 73 cream rows (the foundation row plus 12 repeats x 6 rows).

— Scalloped Edge (cream, sage and cream) :

Round 1 (cream): Join cream in the last st of the last row (this is a corner). Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. Work 2 sc in each row end down the side (242 sc), 3 sc in the corner, sc in each of the next 257 chs across the foundation row, 3 sc in the corner, 2 sc in each row end up the other side (242 sc), 3 sc in the corner, sc in each of the next 257 sts across the last row. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off cream. (Corners 4 x 3 = 12 sc, top and bottom 2 x 257 = 514 sc, sides 2 x 242 = 484 sc. Total 1,010 sc)
Round 2 (sage): Join sage in the center sc of any corner. Ch 3, 4 dc in the same sc (first shell). *Skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc; repeat from * 200 more times (201 times in all), skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 1 sc, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off sage. (202 shells of 5 dc, 202 sc; a shell sits in the center sc of each corner)
Round 3 (cream): Join cream in the center (3rd) dc of any shell. Ch 1, sc in the same dc. *Ch 4, sc in the center dc of the next shell; repeat from * 200 more times, ch 4, join with a sl st to the first sc. (202 sc, 202 ch-4 arches)
Round 4 (cream): Sl st into the first ch-4 arch. Ch 3, 6 dc in the same arch (first fan). *Sc in next sc, 7 dc in next ch-4 arch; repeat from * 200 more times, sc in the next sc, join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off and weave in ends. (202 fans of 7 dc, 1,414 dc, 202 sc)

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make the foundation row and work the 12 stripe repeats, carrying the unused color loosely up the side or fastening off and rejoining as you prefer.
  2. Work the final sage band, then weave in all ends so the body is ready to block.
  3. Wet block the body flat to about 74 by 82 inches, pinning the edges straight, and let it dry completely before you start the edge.
  4. Work Round 1 of the Scalloped Edge in cream around all four sides, placing a stitch marker in each corner and counting 1,010 sc.
  5. Work Round 2 in sage to make the 202 fans, with a shell in the center sc of each corner so the scallops turn neatly.
  6. Work Rounds 3 and 4 in cream to make the arches and the 202 cream fans.
  7. Weave in the last ends and block lightly again, shaping the scallops with pins, before using the bedspread.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Crossing the stitches in the wrong direction on some rows. Always work the second dc into the skipped stitch, in front of the first dc, so the braid stays even.

Losing the stitch count in the fan row. Count 44 sc and 43 shells in Row 4 before you turn, because Row 5 depends on it.

Carrying the unused color too tight up the side. Keep the strand loose so the sides do not pull in.

Changing the number of rows without recalculating the edge. The edge needs exactly 123 rows, so keep a stitch marker on every 10th row to count.

Important Notes

Gauge and size: 14 sts and 6 rows in dc measure about 4 in (10 cm). The body is about 74 by 82 inches and the finished bedspread is about 82 by 90 inches with the edge. It will weigh about 7.5 lb (3.4 kg).

Stitch counts, yarn amounts and size are estimated from the photo, so make a swatch of one stripe repeat and proofread the counts before you start the whole project.

If you change the number of rows, recalculate Round 1: each side takes 2 sc per row end except the two corner rows, and the total must divide by 5 for Round 2 to work evenly.

Wash in cool water on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, because the sage and cream yarns can bleed together. Lay flat to dry.

I hope you enjoy every stripe as much as I do. Take your time, count your rows, and before long you will have a bedspread you made with your own hands. Happy crocheting!

You Ask, We Answer

How big is the finished bedspread?

It measures about 74 by 82 inches before the edge and about 82 by 90 inches with the edge. Add or remove stripe repeats to change the length, and change the foundation chain in multiples of 6 to change the width.

Can I use a different yarn weight or hook size?

Yes. Any yarn works if you adjust the hook size, but the size and the yarn amounts will change. Work a swatch first, measure it, and recalculate the foundation chain, keeping it a multiple of 6 plus 3.

How do I wash and care for it?

Machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water with a color catcher, and lay it flat to dry. Because the piece is large and heavy when wet, support its weight so the stitches do not stretch.
