About This Terracotta and Mustard Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 56 identical squares. Each square has a center worked corner to corner in puffy 3 dc blocks, with terracotta triangles in two opposite corners, golden mustard bands and a cream band across the middle. Two puffy cream granny rounds and a thin mustard round frame every square.

The squares are joined with cream seams and finished with a scalloped cream edge outlined in mustard. The finished size is about 84 by 96 inches (213 by 244 cm), which fits a queen bed with a good drop on both sides. You only need chains, slip stitches, single crochet and double crochet, so it suits anyone ready for a big, rewarding project.

Why You'll Love This Terracotta and Mustard Granny Square Bed Cover Crochet Pattern Pattern

I love that this whole bed cover is really one small square made again and again. You can crochet a square on the sofa, in the car or at a friend's kitchen table, and nothing feels heavy until the very end.

The warm mustard and terracotta against soft cream make a bedroom feel calm and cozy, and the diamonds that appear when you turn the squares are such a happy surprise. It also makes a lovely housewarming or wedding gift.

Switch Things Up

Try navy, sage and cream for a cooler look, or dusty rose, plum and cream for a softer one. Make a grid of 4 squares by 5 squares for a cozy sofa throw. Join 2 by 2 squares into a matching pillow cover, or use only the center square pattern for a set of cushion tops. For a simpler finish, stop after the single crochet edge round and skip the scallops.

— Color-Block Center (Make 56, terracotta, mustard and cream) :

A block is 3 dc worked into a ch-3 sp. Each row is one diagonal of the square, so the row number equals the number of blocks until Row 7, then the blocks go down by one each row. Leave a 6 inch (15 cm) tail at every color change and weave it in later. Make 56 squares.
Increase row: Ch 6, dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each of the next 2 ch (first block made). Then work (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in each ch-3 sp of the previous row. Turn.
Decrease row: Sl st in each of the next 3 dc and in the ch-3 sp of the first block. Ch 3, 3 dc in the same sp. Then work (sl st, ch 3, 3 dc) in each following ch-3 sp, leaving the last ch-3 sp of the previous row unworked. Turn.
Row 1 (terracotta): Ch 6, dc in the 4th ch from hook and in each of the next 2 ch. Turn. (1 block)
Row 2 (terracotta): Work an increase row. (2 blocks)
Row 3 (terracotta): Work an increase row. Fasten off terracotta. (3 blocks)
Row 4 (mustard): Join mustard in the last ch-3 sp worked, then work an increase row. (4 blocks)
Row 5 (mustard): Work an increase row. Fasten off mustard. (5 blocks)
Row 6 (cream): Join cream and work an increase row. (6 blocks)
Row 7 (cream): Work an increase row. This is the longest diagonal. (7 blocks)
Row 8 (cream): Work a decrease row. Fasten off cream. (6 blocks)
Row 9 (mustard): Join mustard and work a decrease row. (5 blocks)
Row 10 (mustard): Work a decrease row. Fasten off mustard. (4 blocks)
Row 11 (terracotta): Join terracotta and work a decrease row. (3 blocks)
Row 12 (terracotta): Work a decrease row. (2 blocks)
Row 13 (terracotta): Work a decrease row. Fasten off. The center is now a 7 by 7 block square of 49 blocks: 12 terracotta, 18 mustard and 19 cream, about 10 inches (25 cm) wide. (1 block)

— Cluster Border (Make 56, cream and mustard) :

Each side of the center has 7 blocks, with a ch-3 sp on every block along the edge. The 4 corner blocks count as corner spaces, and each side has 5 side blocks between its corners.
Round 1 (cream): Join cream with a sl st in any corner ch-3 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp. *(Ch 1, 3 dc in the next side ch-3 sp) 5 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-3 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, then (ch 1, 3 dc in the next side ch-3 sp) 5 times, ch 1. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. (84 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 24 ch-1 sps)
Round 2 (cream): Sl st in the next 2 dc and into the corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp, ch 2, 3 dc in the same sp. *(Ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp) 6 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the next corner ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, then (ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp) 6 times, ch 1. Join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3. Fasten off cream. (96 dc, 4 ch-2 sps, 28 ch-1 sps)
Round 3 (mustard): Join mustard with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same sp. *Sc in each of the next 24 dc and in each of the 7 ch-1 sps along the side (31 sc), 3 sc in the next corner ch-2 sp. Repeat from * 2 more times, then sc in each dc and ch-1 sp along the last side (31 sc). Join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (136 sc, 31 sc on each side plus 3 sc in each corner)
Block every square to 12 inches (30 cm) square before joining so all 56 squares match.

— Layout and Joining :

Layout: arrange the squares in a grid 7 squares across and 8 squares down (56 squares). Turn every other square a quarter turn in a checkerboard, so the terracotta corners meet in groups of four at every second seam crossing and form diamonds. Finished size is about 84 by 96 inches (213 by 244 cm).
Row seams (make 8 rows of 7 squares): Place two squares with wrong sides together and match the stitches. With cream, sc through both squares in each of the 35 stitches from one corner center sc to the next, including both corner center sc. Fasten off. Join 7 squares this way into one row. (35 sc per seam, 6 seams per row)
Joining the rows (7 long seams): Place two rows with wrong sides together and match the stitches. With cream, sc through both rows, working 35 sc across each square and working one sc at every point where four corners meet, so each shared corner is worked only once. Fasten off. (239 sc per long seam)

— Scalloped Edge (cream and mustard) :

Round 1 (cream): Join cream with a sl st in any outer corner. Ch 1, 3 sc in the same st. *Sc in each stitch along the side: 33 sc along every square edge, plus 1 sc at each point where two squares meet. Work 3 sc in the next outer corner. Repeat from * around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (237 sc on each short side, 271 sc on each long side, 12 corner sc, 1,028 sc total)
Round 2 (cream): Sl st in any sc. *Skip 1 sc, 5 dc in the next sc, skip 1 sc, sl st in the next sc. Repeat from * 257 times in total, ending with the last sl st in the first sl st. Fasten off cream. (257 shells of 5 dc, 1,285 dc)
Round 3 (mustard): Join mustard with a sl st in the first dc of any shell. *Sc in each of the 5 dc of the shell, sl st in the sl st between shells. Repeat from * around. Fasten off and weave in ends. (1,285 sc, 257 sl st)
The 1,028 sc of Round 1 divide evenly by 4, so exactly 257 shells fit around the cover. Count Round 1 before you start Round 2.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Block all 56 squares to 12 inches (30 cm) and weave in every tail before you start joining.
  2. Lay the squares out in a grid of 7 across and 8 down, turning every other square a quarter turn so the terracotta corners meet.
  3. Join the squares into 8 rows of 7 with cream sc seams, wrong sides together, so the seam makes a raised ridge on the right side.
  4. Join the 8 rows together with the 7 long cream seams, working one sc at each point where four corners meet.
  5. Work the cream single crochet round around the outer edge, with 3 sc in each outer corner.
  6. Work the cream shell round, then the mustard outline round to finish the scallops.
  7. Block the whole cover flat with pins, let it dry fully, and check that the scalloped edge lies flat.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Miscounting the blocks in the decrease rows makes the center lopsided, so count the blocks at the end of every row against the numbers in brackets.

Skipping blocking leaves squares of slightly different sizes, which makes the seams pucker, so block every square the same way.

Turning all squares the same way hides the diamond pattern, so turn every other square a quarter turn before you join.

Starting the shell round without checking the 1,028 sc total means the scallops will not fit evenly, so count Round 1 first.

Important Notes

Each center should measure about 10 inches (25 cm) and each finished square about 12 inches (30 cm) after blocking. Make and block one square before you start the other 55, and change your hook size if yours comes out much smaller or larger.

Yarn amounts, block sizes and finished size are estimated from the photo, so buy extra yarn and test-swatch one square before you commit to the whole cover.

Cotton is heavy when wet. Wash gently in cool water, dry flat, and use a color catcher for the first few washes because the dark and light yarns are used together.

I hope you enjoy making this bed cover one square at a time. Take your time, enjoy the warm colors, and send me a photo when yours is on the bed.

You Ask, We Answer

What size is the finished bed cover?

With 56 squares in a grid of 7 by 8, the cover measures about 84 by 96 inches (213 by 244 cm), which suits a queen bed with a good drop. Use fewer squares for a throw or a smaller bed.

Can I use a different yarn weight?

Yes, but the square size and yarn amounts will change. Make one square first, measure it, and adjust the number of squares in your grid to reach the size you want.

How do I wash and care for the finished cover?

Wash it gently in cool water, use a color catcher for the first few washes, and dry it flat. Reshape the scalloped edge while it is damp so the shells stay neat.
