150-200 Hours 2 made this
Intermediate Level

You need to be comfortable with half double crochet in the back loop and simple decreases.

150-200 Hours

Each leaf takes about 30 minutes, so this is a long, cozy project.

One Leaf at a Time

Every leaf is small and portable, so you can crochet it anywhere.

About This Red Leaf Crochet Bed Cover Pattern Pattern

This bed cover is made from 252 raised, ribbed leaves in a deep tomato red. Each leaf has a braided center vein, slanting ribs and a soft scalloped edge. The leaves are joined in staggered rows that all point the same way, so the whole bed looks like it is covered in layered petals.

The finished queen size is about 90 by 99 inches, and the pattern also includes two matching pillow shams. You will use half double crochet in the back loop only, simple decreases, a surface slip stitch vein and a slip stitch join. It suits crocheters who want a big, rewarding project made in small pieces.

Why You'll Love This Red Leaf Crochet Bed Cover Pattern Pattern

I love that this whole bed cover starts with one small leaf. You can make one on the sofa, in the car or at a friend's kitchen table, and nothing feels heavy until the very end.

It is also a wonderful gift for a wedding or a new home. A bold red cover warms up a bedroom right away, and the matching shams make it feel finished.

Switch Things Up

Try deep forest green, mustard, or soft oatmeal for a quieter bedroom. Make 8 leaves across and 9 rows long for a 72-leaf sofa throw of about 52 by 50 inches. Use a smaller hook and lighter yarn for a baby blanket, or work each row in a slightly different shade of the same color family for an ombre look. You can also make a single matching pillow cover for a chair.

— Ribbed Leaf (Make 252 for the bed cover and 32 for the shams, red) :

Work every row in the back loop only (blo) unless it says otherwise. The center stitch of each row becomes the vein line. Gauge: 12 hdc and 9 rows measure 4 inches in blo. Each finished leaf is about 7 inches wide and 9 inches tall with the edge.
Row 1: Ch 4, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch. Turn. (3 hdc)
Rows 2-8: Ch 1, 2 hdc in first st, hdc blo in each st across to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. (Row 2: 5 hdc, Row 3: 7 hdc, Row 4: 9 hdc, Row 5: 11 hdc, Row 6: 13 hdc, Row 7: 15 hdc, Row 8: 17 hdc)
Rows 9-12: Ch 1, hdc blo in each st across. Turn. (17 hdc in each row)
Row 13: Ch 1, hdc2tog blo over first 2 sts, hdc blo in each st across to last 2 sts, hdc2tog blo over last 2 sts. Turn. (15 hdc)
Row 14: Repeat Row 13. (13 hdc)
Row 15: Ch 1, hdc2tog blo twice, hdc blo in next 5 sts, hdc2tog blo twice. Turn. (9 hdc)
Row 16: Ch 1, hdc2tog blo twice, hdc blo in next st, hdc2tog blo twice. Turn. (5 hdc)
Row 17: Ch 1, hdc2tog blo, hdc blo in next st, hdc2tog blo. Turn. (3 hdc)
Row 18: Ch 1, hdc3tog blo. Do not fasten off. (1 hdc)
Edge Round 1: Without turning, ch 1, work 3 sc in the tip st, work 17 sc down the left side (1 sc in each row end of Rows 17 to 1), work 1 sc in each of the 3 foundation chs, work 17 sc up the right side (1 sc in each row end of Rows 1 to 17), sl st to first sc. (40 sc)
Edge Round 2: Ch 1, *sk 1 sc, 5 dc in next sc, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc; repeat from * 9 more times, ending with the last sl st in the joining sl st. Fasten off and leave a 12 inch tail. (10 scallops, 50 dc, 10 sl st)
Braided vein: with the right side facing and yarn held at the back, insert the hook in the center st of each row from the base to the tip, pull up a loop and pull it through the loop on your hook. This surface slip stitch line makes the braided look. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

— Layout (252 leaves, 18 rows of 14) :

Arrange the leaves with the tips pointing toward the foot of the bed. Block every leaf to about 7 inches wide before you join anything.
Odd rows: Place 14 leaves side by side with their scalloped sides just touching. Use this for Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and 17. (14 leaves per row)
Even rows: Place 14 leaves shifted half a leaf to the right of the row above, so each leaf sits between two leaves of the previous row. Use this for Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. (14 leaves per row)
Totals: 18 rows of 14 leaves is 252 leaves, about 90 inches wide and 99 inches long. The half-leaf shift makes the long sides step in and out, and this hides over the sides of the mattress.

— Joining the Leaves :

Join in rows: Hold two neighbouring leaves with right sides facing up. With a slip stitch, join through the top loops of the 5 dc of the scallop they share, starting at the tip of the scallop. (5 sl st per joined scallop)
Join the rows: Join the finished rows to each other the same way, working through the touching scallops. Keep the joins loose so the cover drapes softly.

— Pillow Sham Front (Make 2, red) :

Each sham front is 16 leaves in 4 columns and 4 rows, about 26 by 22 inches, and fits a standard 20 by 26 inch pillow.
Layout: Arrange 4 leaves across and 4 rows down with the same half-leaf shift on even rows. Join with slip stitches as for the bed cover. (16 leaves per sham)

— Sham Back Panel (Make 4, red) :

Row 1: Ch 80, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (78 hdc)
Rows 2-35: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), hdc in each st across. Turn. (78 hdc in each row)
Each back panel is about 26 by 14 inches. Overlap two panels by 6 inches for an envelope opening.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Make all 252 bed cover leaves and block each one to about 7 inches wide, pinning the scallops open to dry.
  2. Lay out the leaves on the floor or a large bed in 18 rows of 14, with the tips pointing toward the foot and every even row shifted half a leaf.
  3. Join the leaves in each row with slip stitches through the top loops of the shared scallop dc, then join the rows to each other the same way.
  4. Take a photo of the layout before you start joining so you can check the shift on the even rows as you go.
  5. For the shams, join 16 leaves in 4 columns and 4 rows, then make the 4 back panels.
  6. Place a back panel on the front with right sides together, overlapping the second panel by 6 inches, and join all around with sc through both layers. Turn right side out.
  7. Weave in all remaining ends and block the finished cover lightly with a damp cloth.

Common Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Working the rows through both loops makes the leaf stiff and hides the ribbing. Stay in the back loop only, except where a row says otherwise.

Miscounting the 3 sc at the leaf tip makes the edge uneven. Mark the tip stitch before you start the edge.

Forgetting to shift the even rows leaves gaps between leaves. Check the layout against a photo before you join.

Pulling the slip stitch joins tight makes the cover pucker. Keep the join stitches as loose as the rest of the work.

Important Notes

Gauge is 12 hdc and 9 rows in 4 inches in the back loop only. Make a test leaf first, because a larger leaf changes the finished size and the yarn amount.

Yarn amounts are estimates, so buy extra from the same dye lot before you start.

Block every leaf before joining so all the leaves are the same size.

Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, and dry flat. Deep red yarn can bleed the first time you wash it.

I hope this cover makes your bedroom feel warm and special. Take it one leaf at a time, and enjoy watching it grow. I would love to see yours when it is done.

You Ask, We Answer

What is the finished size of the bed cover?

The queen size cover is about 90 by 99 inches. It is made from 252 leaves in 18 rows of 14.

Can I use a different yarn weight or make a different size?

Yes. A lighter yarn with a smaller hook gives smaller leaves, so you will need more leaves. For a sofa throw, make 8 leaves across and 9 rows long, which is 72 leaves and about 52 by 50 inches.

How do I wash and care for the finished cover?

Wash it in cold water on a gentle cycle with a color catcher, then dry it flat. Do not hang it wet, because the weight will stretch the leaves.
